Patio Pacific Boracay Hosts “Dancers for Freedom” Concert IT was the one event that the island resort of Boracay had eagerly anticipated --- the visit of the famous Kalilayan Folkloric Group and their “Dancers for Freedom” musical show. The venue was Patio Pacific, and host of the dance delegation from Catanauan, Quezon, and Patio Pacific resort owner, Kelly Boncan, and her hardworking marketing staff, had ensured the overall success of the three-day stint. Schoolchildren, parents and resort guests had dates reserved for watching the series of performances.
Among the special guests who came all the way from Manila was Department of Tourism Region IV Director Louella Jurilla, and she saw how the spirit of cultural exchange had successfully propelled the government’s efforts through valuable initiatives like “Dancers for Freedom”. So moved was she by the performances that she extended an invitation to the group from Quezon to perform for the Department of Tourism. Likewise, Patio Pacific was lauded for its efforts to promote art and culture to the grassroots level by way of a trainors’ dance workshop which KFG offered for free to school musical & cultural coordinators from the island and province.
Endorsed by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Education, ‘Dancers for Freedom” was co-sponsored by South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR) and was supported by the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) and Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. | DOT Supports Metrostar Ferry Route Expansion |
Jul/14/2008 |
|
DOT Supports Metrostar Ferry Route Expansion The Department of Tourism (DOT) has expressed its support for the expansion plans of Metrostar Ferry, Inc. (Metrostar) as the company commemorates its first year of operation.
The water transit company currently conveys travelers between the Mall of Asia, Pasay City (MOA) and Cavite City and offers leisure cruises on Manila Bay.
“Metrostar’s cruises and commuter services have strategically opened up the tourism potentials of both the Manila bay area and Cavite City, and have made travel more convenient for visitors and locals alike. The Department welcomes their intents to offer more routes to nearby destinations,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
According to Metrostar President Restie Bicomong, “The company has lined up a series of expansion programs starting this year. These include interconnecting with the Pasig River Ferry, and plying the route emanating from the MOA terminal to Orion, Bataan.”
The company was invited by the Department of Transportation & Communication and the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission to travel into Pasig River and dock at the Plaza Mexico, Intramuros terminal. This will open up water transfer between Pasig and Cavite City.
Meanwhile, the new MOA-Bataan service is touted to shorten travel time to the famed former military stronghold will take approximately one hour and 20 minutes. Land travel from Manila takes around four hours.
In support of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s nautical highway, Metrostar is also contemplating other routes from its MOA terminal: a 45-minute trip to Navotas, an hour and 45 minutes to Hagonoy, Bulacan, and an hour and 40-minutes to Guagua, Pampanga.
All these new destinations will be serviced by the operator’s future expanded fleet of 15 ferry boats.
Almost a year after its maiden voyage in July 2007, Metrostar has become a viable transportation alternative to traffic-congested Cavite. While land travel takes two hours, a Metrostar ferry ride from Cavite City to Pasay only takes about 40 minutes.
The Metrostar Manila Bay leisure cruises offer daytime and evening tours, which include an introduction of the area’s history and viewing of the major sights in the metropolis. With the Bay known for its spectacular sunsets, the evening tours are more popular. The location of the terminal – world class shopping haven Mall of Asia – is a destination in itself.
A 100 percent Filipino-owned corporation which started operating a daily ferry service between Cavite City and the MOA in mid-2007, Metrostar has put into service brand new and modern Filipino-designed twin-hull, twin-engine, fiberglass ferryboats with a 130-550 passenger capacity.
Passenger terminals are located at the MOA complex fronting Manila Bay, beside the Shrine of Jesus Church, and at the port of Cavite City, behind the municipal hall.
Fares for the MOA-Cavite City (and vice versa) route have been recently reduced from Php75 to Php55 per person. Senior citizens and students enjoy a special marked-down rate. Leisure cruises are pegged at Php120 per person. These fares include passenger insurance of up to Php200,000.

| Barrio Fiesta sa London: A Celebration of Filipino Life and Culture |
Jul/11/2008 |
|
Barrio Fiesta sa London: A Celebration of Filipino Life and Culture The barrio fiesta is one of the most remarkable aspects of Filipino life and culture. It is a very old tradition that has the exuberant characteristics of Hispanic influence overlaid on ancient pre-colonial rituals that marked festive events of communal achievement, such as bountiful harvests and great victories.
With millions of OFWSs as well as immigrants now comprising the huge overseas Filipino community, the barrio fiesta has become one of the most interesting features of Pinoy expatriate life, and this colourful event does not any bigger than the annual Philippines Barrio Fiesta sa London. Now on its 24th year, the festival is traditionally held on a summer weekend in July at Lampton Park in the London borough of Hounslow. Today, it is one of the biggest celebrations of Filipino life, culture and community spirit anywhere in the world, drawing tens of thousands of fiesta-goers not only from all over the UK but from other countries as well.
The annual festive gathering in Hounslow has become, for the Filipino community of almost two hundred thousand settled residents and new migrants to the UK, a high point of their social and cultural life. The fiesta is a much-awaited opportunity to have a respite from their labours, to renew acquaintances, treat their loved ones to a joyous day or weekend at the fair, share and enjoy Filipino food with their British friends and relatives, and enjoy once again the artistic brilliance of local talents as well as Manila-sourced performers who sing, dance, and oblige with classic Pinoy vaudeville humor on a makeshift stage.
The barrio fiesta is a good time to feel proud to be Filipino, to be able to display our vaunted qualities of cheerfulness in the face of adversity, and hospitality and warmth almost to a fault. It is an opportunity to cast aside our quarrels and differences and share once again the spirit of camaraderie and kinship that is the hallmark of Filipino festivals back home. It is a chance for us to promote our products, our amazing Asian and Western fusion cuisine, as well as our world-class tourist attractions.
Last year’s barrio fiesta in London drew a record weekend crowd of 80,000 people, almost double the attendance in recent years. Not even the strongest tempest has been known to dampen the holiday spirit of fiesta-goers, majority of whom were overseas Filipino workers with whole families and even visiting friends in tow—nurses and hospital workers, professionals and students, long-time UK residents working in British companies and institutions. They were joined by numerous Brits and other nationalities—Caucasian, Asian, African, Caribbean, etc.— who were obviously having the time of their lives.
“The barrio fiesta,” according to Philippine Tourism Attache in London, Domingo Enerio III, “has been serving as a gateway for our British friends and people of other nationalities in the UK: here they get introduced to the endless offerings of the Philippines, they get enticed to visit our islands, especially when we tell them of the wealth of beautiful customs and traditions waiting to be experienced in the Philippines, as well as the natural wonders of nature that our country has to offer even to the most jaded travellers from Europe!”
In practically all barrio fiestas in the UK, the Philippine Department of Tourism office in London has always put up a booth that is always attractive, welcoming, and helpful to the potential tourist to the Philippines. With the upcoming barrio fiesta in Lampton Park, and other similar events taking place throughout England during the summer, the PDOT will again have its hands full handling inquiries from interested visitors, and actually helping them plan their getaway to the Philippines, with value-for-money tour packages and the guarantee of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in a country rightfully called the Pearl of the Orient.
“Promoting the Philippines through one of our most popular events—the barrio fiesta—has proven to be so successful in the UK that we plan to do this also in similar events across Europe, where similar festivals are regularly held by our Filipino communities,” adds Tourism Attache Enerio. “Thus, our barrio fiesta in this part of the world will not simply be a community celebration of our Filipino life and culture, but an exciting invitation to our British and European friends to experience the delights of our festive traditions right there in our country!”
The theme of this year’s barrio fiesta is "Community Cohesion and Youth Awareness". As in previous years, the fiesta will again feature a colorful display of Philippine arts and crafts, stage entertainment through music, songs and performances of folk and modern dance, a mouth-watering array of the most savory and exotic Philippine cuisine, and amusement rides and other funfare for children.
The Philippine Department of Tourism London office headed by Tourism Attaché Domingo Enerio III will again be spearheading the regular participation in the fiesta by the Philippine Embassy, according to DOT public relations officer Chit Afuang. Embassy officials led by Ambassador Edgardo B. Espiritu will also grace the occasion. The Embassy and the DOT will have a booth to give out information and render assistance to Filipinos coming to the festival. This time, there will be a bigger space for Philippine tourism promotion and marketing, in view of increasing interest in the Philippines as shown by record numbers of British and European visitors last year.

| DOT Joins Call for Better Halal promotion in Philippines |
Jul/14/2008 |
|
DOT Joins Call for Better Halal promotion in Philippines The Department of Tourism (DOT) has joined the call to intensify the promotion and availability of halal food, which is touted to help the country claim a bigger share of the global Muslim tourist market.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, “The Department is one with the vision of making the Philippines a culture-sensitive destination. There is a need in making our Muslim tourists and travelers more welcome by having more establishments cater to their dietary requirements. This is one way we enhance the Filipino’s brand of hospitality.”
The DOT co-sponsored the recent National Halal Convention held at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City. The two-day event brought together 600 local and national government officials, Muslim religious leaders and experts, food manufacturers and exporters, certification professionals, local and international civic group representatives, and diplomats to discuss issues on improving the production of and access to halal food in key consumer areas in the country.
“The Department is currently striving to help make halal cuisine available in our tourist destinations in anticipation of the influx of travelers from Malaysia and the Gulf States,” said DOT Director for Product Research and Development Elizabeth Nelle speech at the welcome cocktails.
The DOT is one of the key government agencies that spearhead the awareness and promotion of the local halal food industry. This special interest group also includes representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Health, the Office on Muslim Affairs, the ARMM Governor and the Chair of Philippine Halal Accreditation Board.
The Department currently implements a country-wide program that advocates the preparation and presentation of halal meals and food products among hotels, restaurants, resorts and airlines.
To date, alignment sessions have begun with the management of Hyatt Hotel and Casino, Makati Shangri-La Hotel and Sofitel Philippine Plaza. Information exchanges with Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Turkey have likewise occurred.
These and other local efforts have been lauded by the hosts of the 3rd World Halal Forum (WHF) held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center in Malaysia early this year. The two-day World Halal Forum drew in policy makers, community leaders, Islamic scholars and business decision makers from more than 50 countries around the world.
The Philippines was particularly congratulated by Malaysia Prime Minister Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi after the presentation of the advocacy and awareness programs for the Philippine tourism industry.
The Philippine National Standards on Halal Food was formalized in March this year, laying out the specifics of processing, preparing and handling the ingredients used in meals and food items in accordance to Islamic laws and teaching. The guidelines were crafted by the Philippine Halal Accreditation Board.
The DOT is optimistic that the Philippine National Halal Standards will help the country tap the 1.9 billion global Muslim population for potential tourists, making the islands a premiere tropical destination that is also keen on the cultural and religious beliefs of international travelers. |

Talks on for Sta. Rosa, Laguna – Toyokawa, Japan Twinning Agreement Talks are in place for a twinning agreement between Sta. Rosa, Laguna and Toyokawa City in Japan.
This development was revealed by the Department of Tourism (DOT) after it facilitated the initial meeting between the local government officials of the said jurisdictions.
“We’re optimistic that forthcoming talks between the two cities will eventually lead to a more formal cooperative program that will bring mutual benefits. The Department decided that Sta. Rosa and Toyokawa would make a perfect match in terms of their local industries,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
Sta. Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas-Nazareno led a six-man delegation accompanied by DOT Region IV Director Louella Jurilla in their initial conference with Toyokawa City Mayor Minoru Yamawaki.
“We had a very productive meeting with our counterparts in Toyokawa City. Plans for arranging a sister cityhood is very plausible since our development goals tie up well,” shared Mayor Arcillas.
Arcillas further reported that they have invited the Toyokawa government officials to visit her jurisdiction to continue the exchange and work towards finalizing the agreement.
The twinning agreement would focus on the transfer of knowledge and technology that would mutually develop their domestic industries, which is dominated by manufacturing. The cooperation would also include tourism, cultural and academic exchanges. Venues for discussing local governance and policy will also be explored.
Sta. Rosa is a 1st Class City in the Laguna province. Dubbed the “Investment Capital of South Luzon,” the city is host to the manufacturing plants of several Japanese multinational companies, including Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi. Foodstuff producer Monde Nissin Corporation also has a facility located in Sta. Rosa’s Barangay Balibago.
Sta. Rosa is also known as the site of Enchanted Kingdom, one of the major theme parks in the Philippines, as well as several housing developments.
In the same manner, Toyokawa City of the Aichi Prefecture is known as the production area for transportation equipment and parts, general machinery, electronics and agricultural goods.

| DOT Pushes Rural Tourism to Hike Countryside Income |
Mar/27/2008 |
|
DOT Pushes Rural Tourism to Hike Countryside Income The Department of Tourism (DOT) is promoting community-based rural tourism to optimize the production and sale of indigenous products, boost household incomes and encourage ecological preservation in the countryside.
The DOT is coordinating with Asian Productivity Organization Japan, Philippine Small and Medium Business Development Foundation, Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC) for this program.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “The community-based rural tourism project was designed to stimulate sustainable economic activity in the countryside and open up more opportunities to uplift the quality of life.”
The tourism chief added that the project complements the DOT’s thrust to protect natural resources by offering eco-tourism as a better alternative to dynamite fishing, slash-and-burn farming and other practices that destroy, pollute and endanger the rural environment.
To help jumpstart the program, a seminar on Community-Based Rural Tourism will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Cebu City on March 26-28.
The seminar aims to enlighten community organizations and enterprises on the many opportunities from rural tourism, how to market and promote their local culture, natural attractions, products and services as package. Participants will further learn how to develop and preserve natural and man-made assets.
The sessions will also cover the basics of project planning and implementation, establishing a hospitality industry in rural destinations and maintaining the delivery of high-quality services to meet traveler expectations.
“We plan to share with them models of best practices in rural tourism management, thus raising the level of their capabilities in this new enterprise,” Durano explained.
Representatives national and provincial tourism organizations and from local industry associations and chambers of commerce are expected to attend the seminar. Small and medium entrepreneurs, provincial and municipal officials, travel agents, tour operators, and executives of local hotels and resorts will also be present.
As of this report, over 220 participants have confirmed their attendance for the seminar, exceeding the targeted number of 150. |

| DOT, Tourism Industry Expands Reach into Japan Outbound Market |
Jul/14/2008 |
|
DOT, Tourism Industry Expands Reach into Japan Outbound Market The Department of Tourism (DOT) and its private sector partners has recently concluded business talks with over 1,127 Japanese tour operators and industry stakeholders at the Fourth Philippine Business Mission (PBM). Co-sponsored by Philippine Airlines, the week-long road show covered, for the first time, Fukuoka in addition to Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, "We have reached an unprecedented attendance in the four-year history of organizing the PBM. This mission has opened new opportunities for both our local industry players and their Japanese counterparts."
Durano led a 65-man delegation representing local tour operators, dive centers, hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, transportation services and provincial tourism offices.
The PBM program involved a briefing session on the country's tourism destinations, facilities, services, flight availability and other vital travel data.
Cebu and Manila currently stand as the most popular destinations for Japanese travelers. While these areas were presented at the PBM, they shared the spotlight with Davao, Bohol, Boracay, Palawan, Laguna, Batangas and Negros –places that the DOT anticipates would become the next holiday hotspots for this market.
Philippine Airlines, the biggest carrier flying between Japan and the country, was also present to highlight the latest business class and cabin upgrades, aircraft acquisitions and other developments that would benefit the Japanese traveler. The flag carrier flies more than 26 times weekly from Manila and Cebu to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
Japanese nationals further gave testimonials about their visits to the Philippines. Freelance photographer Hironobu Mochizuki teased the audience with colorful images of Filipino fiestas, locations and other sights.
"Nature, history, shopping, relaxation –you can enjoy all of them. No matter where you go, you will be greeted with cordial Filipino hospitality and talking with local people will be one of the pleasures," shared Sakoto Matsui, who works for Osaka-based non-government organization Japan Asian Association and Asian Friendship Society.
The travel mart section allowed the Philippine trade participants to conduct one-on-one discussions with Japanese industry stakeholders for possible joint promotional activities.
"Many of the Japanese tour operators know about us but this was a chance for them to update them on what we have to offer and make strong ties for future bookings," said Efren Belarmino, General Manager of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Cebu.
"The participants are very interested in new destinations. They're also receptive to adding our facilities into their Philippine packages," reported Rizza Sebastian, Sales and Marketing Director for Dos Palmas Island Resort & Spa, which has properties in Palawan and Batangas.
Boracay's Discovery Shores Sales Director Leeds Trompeta concurred, "The response was overwhelming. The Japanese are always looking for something extraordinary and they were happy to know that Boracay is ready to cater to premium preferences."
Other Philippine establishments that presented their facilities in various islands included participated in the PBM included Alegre Beach Resort, Alta Visa de Boracay, Boracay Regency Beach Resort and Convention Center, Cebu Parklane International Hotel, Club Paradise, Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, Eden Island Resort, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa, Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa, Hyatt Casino and Hotel, Marco Polo, Oxford Suites, Pacific Cebu Resort, Shangri-La Mactan Resorts and Spa, Tambuli Resorts, The Farm at San Benito and Waterfront Hotels and Casino.
Travel wholesalers ATJ Travel and Tours, Attic Tours, Baron Travel, Cebu San-Pu Tours and Travel, Metropolitan Co. Ltd., Sanyo International Tokyo, Travel Experts Center and Travel Vision also participated in the table-top meeting sessions.
Supporting the presence of the Philippine delegation were Consul General Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez, Vice Consul for Cultural and Filipino Community Affairs Anna de Vera, Osaka-based tourism attaché Araceli Soriano and Tokyo-based tourism attaché Valentino Cabansag.
While in Japan, Durano and DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr. further met with the officers of the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) in Kyushu and Chubu, the Tourism Industry Association of Japan in Tokyo and the DOT’s Japan-based marketing and promotions partner JTB.
According to DOT Undersecretary Jarque, "The Department highly values its relations with JATA and other stakeholders as they are strategic in positioning our destinations."
The sessions sought to align the marketing objectives of the DOT with the Japanese travel industry, identify challenges and explore new programs that will encourage visitor traffic between the Philippines and Japan.
"We see the Philippines as an important partner in Japan's 'Visit the World Campaign' in which the government aims to achieve 20 million outbound tourists by 2010," disclosed JATA Chubu Chairman Nobuhisa Okada.
A cocktail reception closed the day with more opportunities for networking.
Japan is currently the third leading source of travelers to the Philippines. Arrivals from this country reached 157,362 from January to May 2008, providing 11.5 percent of over-all tourist traffic.
The DOT attributes this strong presence to its marketing campaign which targets independent young women, divers and active seniors. These sectors are considered “quality travelers,” who opt for premium activities and accommodations. |

| DOT Begins Tourism Cooperation with India |
Jul/14/2008 |
|
DOT Begins Tourism Cooperation with India The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Ministry of Tourism of India have recently signed a cooperative agreement that will jumpstart projects mutually benefiting the travel industries of the Philippines and India.
"Tourist arrivals from India to our islands grew at an average of 11.4 percent over the past five years. With the many things happening for the Philippines with regards to this market, the signing comes at an opportune time to discuss ways and means that will enable both countries to seize the potentials and enhance tourist traffic," said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, in a statement.
Manas Battacharya, Economic Advisor for the Indian Tourism Ministry, shared, "The similar colonial past and diverse destinations open up many opportunities. This event is the beginning of a journey that will eventually make India and the Philippines an integrated destination for the global traveler."
The agreement includes a seven-day exchange program to allow each party to share experiences in tourism product creation, promotion and marketing, cultural and medical tourism, as well as manpower and infrastructure development.
The industry learning session begins in September 2009 with a five-member delegation from India visiting the main tourist destinations around the country. Likewise, the DOT will organize a similar team to visit India in 2010.
The two parties will further look into enhancing the industry's human resources by organizing and facilitating seminars, workshops and conferences, with much focus on cultural and ecological tourism, hospitality, health and wellness tourism.
The plan also states the participation in travel fairs and other similar events organized in each other's country. This will provide a venue for travel agents, hotels and resorts, transport services and other tourism-related establishments to meet for potential tie-ups and other business prospects.
Business missions, trade invitational events and discussions will be set up to further promote investment in the tourism sector. The DOT and its Indian counterpart will also establish a transfer system for relevant updates and data.
The agreement was signed by DOT Director for Tourism Development and Planning Rolando Cañizal, Manas Battacharya, Economic Advisor for the Indian Tourism Ministry.
The event was witnessed by DOT Team India Head Glen Agustin, DOT Officer-in-Charge for Policy Alex Macatuno, Department of Foreign Affairs Desk Assistant for South Asia Sheila Gestoso, India Tourism Office in Singapore Assistant Director Neela Lad and Indian Embassy in Manila Second Secretary Ashiok Warrier.
"Already, we are looking into the possibility of packaging India, the Philippines and another ASEAN country as a single tourism product. This is a simple way of going around the challenge of the current flight availability between our country and India," revealed DOT Director Rolando Cañizal.
At the moment, air transport services between the countries include stopovers at either Singapore or Malaysia. The DOT sees the cooperative projects to strategically increase travel in the long term and thus create a stronger demand for seats.
Indian tourist arrivals from January to May 2008 grew by 24.4 percent over the same period last year.
Expenditures from Indian travelers amounted to U.S.$ 53.9 million in 2007. This provided 11 percent of the sector's overall earnings from foreign arrivals. Spending focused mainly on accommodation, food and beverage, and shopping.

| DOT Calls for Private Sector Participants to Europe Sales Events |
July/17/2008 |
|
DOT Calls for Private Sector Participants to Europe Sales Events Department of Tourism (DOT) is inviting hotels, resorts, tour operators, transport services, and other travel-related establishments to assist in promoting the country’s adventure tourism destinations around the Philippines in three major events in France and Russia this September.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, “Europe is one of our growth areas. While we maintain strong presence in several countries such as the U.K., Germany and France, we are seeing an overwhelming increase in Russian arrivals. Private businesses that have joined us in past marketing missions have gained significant benefits and these activities will open more opportunities.”
From September 16 to 19, the DOT will again take part of the annual TopResa International Travel Market in France. The event is considered the leading business-to-business venue for the French tourism industry with the rest of the world.
TopResa celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and will be held for the first time in Paris. Previous editions were held in Deauville, north of France.
The DOT has reserved a 63-square meter space on which to showcase the country’s latest adventure and eco-tourism activities to over 20,000 travel wholesalers and other industry decision-makers expected to attend.
“What makes this year’s participation exciting is the awareness gained through the latest season of the Koh Lanta reality TV show, which was shot entirely in Caramoan, Camarines Sur,” shared Eduardo Jarque Jr., DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions.
Jarque added that the department will be hosting a Mabuhay Philippine reception night, which will also serve as the celebration party for the cast and crew of Koh Lanta Caramoan.
Koh Lanta is the French version of the popular “Survivor” TV show. The 8th installment, which takes place in Caramoan, builds on the top-rating success of its preceding series located in Palawan.
Closely following TopResa is the DOT’s first-ever selling mission to St. Petersburg, Russia from September 19 to 21. As of this report, the Department has invited over 70 leading tour operators based in this major Russian city to participate and meet with their Filipino counterparts.
The DOT also plans to update the attendees on the latest trends in Philippine tourism, and promote the islands through a special press conference with the Russian media.
A cocktail reception closes the event, providing more opportunities for networking.
The Department anticipates that the promotional activity will help expand its reach into the Russian market. Most visitor arrivals emanate from this area, whose outbound tourism sector is considered one of the most developed in Central Russia.
Dovetailing the St. Petersburg mission are the Otdykh Leisure Moscow and Luxury Leisure Fairs at the Crocus Expo in Moscow from September 23 to 26, 2008. These are Russia’s premier venues for travellers planning their winter holidays and trade players in search of new packages.
This year, the country will occupy a 150-square meter area at the Otdykh Leisure Moscow to entice visitors to choose their adventure under the tropical sun. Meanwhile, a pavilion at the concurrent Luxury Leisure Fair will focus on the country’s health and wellness attractions.
“Our booth earned an award for the visibly dynamic collaboration of the DOT and our private sector partners, as well as the over-all experience we gave our visitors,” noted Verna Buensuceso, head for DOT Team Europe.
Arrivals from Europe during May grew by 15 percent over the figures in same month in 2007. Tourist traffic from France revealed a 28.3 percent hike, while Russia posted a 70.5 percent increase.
The Secretary is confident that the Philippines will maintain its prominence as a choice destination for European adventure-seekers, divers, water sports enthusiasts, nature-lovers and holiday-makers.
Travel and leisure trade enterprises interested in participating in any of the DOT’s promotional activities for Europe may call Verna Buensuceso, Head of DOT Team Europe, at 523-0934, 524-1928 and 523-8411 locals 254 or 256.

| RP Strengthens Visibility in Chinese Outbound Travel Market |
Apr/08/2008 |
|
RP Strengthens Visibility in Chinese Outbound Travel Market The Philippines is out to claim a bigger share of the burgeoning Chinese tourist population as the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the country’s travel trade sector participates in the China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market (COTTM).
To be held at the China World Trade Center in Beijing from April 14 to 16, the COTTM is touted to be the sole business-to-business event dedicated to outbound travel in China. The Philippine delegation expects to align with more than 200 Chinese tour operators in a series of pre-arranged tabletop discussions.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, “China’s emergence in the world economy brings with it a society that has a greater propensity for foreign travel. Being part of the COTTM will strategically enhance the Philippines’ visibility as a preferred destination for leisure and business.”
The local travel industry’s engagement in the COTTM dovetails two successful promotional activities in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Aside from presenting sandy beaches and watersports, English as a Second Language (ESL) educational trips and wedding destinations around the country were the highlights of the Philippine pavilion at the 2008 Shanghai World Travel Fair, one of the major venues to meet the China’s travel trade and consumers.
“Our ability to showcase a wide array of adventure and travel experiences attracted many interested tourists and business decision-makers. Being adjudged as the Best Leisure Tourist Destination by the fair’s organizing committee confirms this,” Durano shared.
Building on the successes gained in Shanghai, the DOT also led the country’s travel trade sector in this year’s Guangzhou International Travel Fair (GITF 2008) from April 4 to 6 at the Guangzhou Jinhan Exhibition Centre.
“China’s tourist population is huge and diverse. The events in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing allow our stakeholders to build up the greatest trade network and meeting the most number of consumers possible,” Arlene Alipio, DOT Team China Marketing Head explained.
DOT Team China, tasked to push the country’s various destinations and attractions to the Chinese travel market, is also set to conduct promotional activities in Chengdu and Chongqing to support Philippine Airlines’ new flight offerings to these provinces.
The flag carrier opened last March its Manila-Chengdu and Manila-Chongqing twice weekly services.
China is currently the fourth largest provider of foreign arrivals. A total of 36,137 Chinese tourists visited the Philippines between January and February 2008. This figure represents a 42.5 percent increase over the same period last year and makes China the fastest growing source country.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization predicts that there will be 100 million outbound Chinese travelers per year by 2020. |

Adventure Philippines breaks out at world's biggest travel fair It's all about leaving the beaten path behind and taking on pure, high-octane adventure.
From mountain trekking to spelunking, encountering rare migratory birds or giant whale sharks, the Department of Tourism (DOT) formally lunged into the Adventure Philippines campaign at the recent Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB Berlin), the largest travel fair in the world.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, "ITB Berlin is the definitive venue for the global travel and tourism industry. Naturally, this proved to be the best place to present the Philippines as one of the top adventure travel destinations in Asia."
Announced during the first quarter of this year, Adventure Philippines promotes the country as the region's center for ecotourism, nature exploration, scuba diving and water sports, and extreme quests.
The DOT has partnered with R.O.X. (Recreational Outdoor Exchange), the biggest outdoor equipment retailer in Southeast Asia, in developing packages and marketing activities.
Durano shared that for a destination to be considered part of Philippine Adventure, it should touch on at least two of three components: involves a physical activity, allows for cultural exchange and interaction, and engages the natural environment or ecology.
Some of the Philippine Adventure excursions announced at the 42nd ITB include hiking and trekking on the various mountain peaks across the country, scuba diving in wreck sites and coral reefs around the islands, white-water rafting, surfing in Siargao, windsurfing in Boracay, mountain biking through Northern Luzon, whale shark interaction in the waters of Donsol, spelunking down the ancient caves of Sagada and rock climbing on the limestone faces of Palawan.
"Our participation in this year's ITB showed a new side of the Philippines. As we strengthened the country's positioning as a relaxing tropical getaway, we also featured destinations for travelers that are out for an adrenaline rush. At the end of the day, it's all about the Philippines offering more than the usual experiences and giving more reasons for visitors to come back," Durano elaborated.
The 42nd ITB Berlin was held at the sprawling 160,000 square meter fairground of the Center ICC in Berlin, Germany. Reputed to be the leading event for the international travel industry, over 11,000 travel wholesalers, resorts, hotels, airlines, cruises, tourism associations, national tourism offices and other tourism-related enterprises from 180 countries and territories were on exhibit for business-to-business transactions and meetings with potential tourists.
This year's expo drew in over 180,000 guests comprised of business decision makers and individuals planning their next holiday.
The 200 square-meter Philippine pavilion featured the breathtaking landscapes, exhilarating extreme sports activities and awe-inspiring dive sites around the islands.
Tour operators Annset Holidays, Art of Travel, Baron Travel, Blue Horizon and Intas Destination Management met up with their counterparts for joint marketing promotions, as well as accommodated inquiries from interested thrill-seekers and vacationers.
Likewise, Pinjalo Resort/Calypso Divers featured the country's world-renowned diving attractions to the watersports sector. Flag carrier Philippine Airlines showcased the various access points to the country, as well as their own package tours.
Badian Island Resort & Spa, Coco Beach Resort, Dos Palmas Resort and Spa, El Nido Resorts, Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa, Hotel Villa Sunset Boracay, Mandala Spa & Villas, Microtel Inns and Suites, Plantation Bay Resort & Spa, Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort & Spa, Mandala Spa & Villas, and The Ananyana presented their amenities and services.
Members of the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company gave exhibit visitors a sampling of the country's culture, music and festivities with daily musical and dance performances.
DOT representatives who led the Philippine delegation at the ITB included DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr., DOT Marketing Head for Team Europe Verna Buensuceso and Frankfurt-based Tourism Attaché Venus Tan.

DOT Participates in Boracay Health and Sanitation Campaigns The Department of Tourism (DOT) has recently counted itself in making Boracay cleaner and safer for tourists and locals by way of its continued participation in programs to help address dengue and residual waste.
“The Department is grateful for the zeal of the private sector and the local government of Boracay in upholding the integrity of the island as one of the country’s top tourist destinations,” Durano said during the welcome remarks of the formal signing of the memoranda of agreement held at Sea Winds Resort in the island.
The Tourism Chief added that the DOT’s efforts in the island complement the goals of the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
“The DOT saw it fit to help them take the initiative, as the tourism sector claims a huge share of the livelihood and economic activity in the island,” he added.
The DOT is working with the Rotary Club of Boracay and the island’s three barangays in promoting healthy habits that help to lessen the occurrence of dengue.
The DOT has provided a PhP 1.75 million grant to fund for the training of local health advocates that will assist and educate residents on the disease, as well as jumpstart information campaigns in schools and other establishments.
The bequest will also be used to purchase ovi traps, fish seedlings, mosquito catchers and non-hazardous sprays to help abate the proliferation of dengue mosquito larvae.
The Department has further partnered with the Boracay Chamber of Commerce and the Central Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) of Boracay for the residual waste management project.
The DOT will be endorsing a PhP 1.85 million fund to help acquire equipment to handle residual waste and for making hollow blocks out of recyclable materials, train MRF workers on the proper use of the technology and to spread information on proper waste disposal among island dwellers.
The residual waste management project is part of the municipality’s 10-year solid waste management plan, which aims to lessen the amount of garbage transferred from Boracay to the mainland of Malay.

DOT Entices Greater Share of Japanese Dive Market Photo shows Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, holding out a Philippine diving brochure that bears the Hello Kitty logo, at the Philippine booth during the recent Marine Dive Fair 2008 held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. With him (far right) is DOT Team Japan Marketing Head Benito Bengzon, Jr.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) and members of the local tourism sector recently staged the best of the country’s underwater adventures at the Marine Diving Fair 2008 (MDF) in Tokyo, Japan.
Brightly lit and bearing images of cool blue aquatic scenery, the Philippines stood out as one of the largest foreign exhibitors in the three-day event held at the Sunshine City Convention Center in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
The MDF is the top diving and beach resort convention for the Japanese travel trade, diving community and holiday-seekers. Over 200 national tourism organizations, dive equipment manufacturers, hotels, airlines, specialized tour operators and other tourism-related establishments from over 65 countries join the fair yearly.
“The Japanese outbound dive market accounts for over a million certified scuba divers. Our participation at the MDF focused on maintaining our country’s presence as a premiere destination for this group. What makes the Philippines attractive are mainly the quality of the underwater experience, the warm and hospitable staff, and the competitive price range of the tour packages,” Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, said.
Assisting to present the best of the islands were representatives from travel wholesalers Expedition Fleet and Blue Coral Diving Tours. Establishments showcasing the facilities and services available to divers included Club Paradise, El Nido Resorts, Pacific Cebu Resorts International, Sun Beam Marine Sports and Philippine Airlines.
Also present at the Philippine pavilion to answer queries from fair visitors were members of the Philippine Tourism Authority and the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving.
Accompanying Secretary Durano were DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr., DOT Team Japan Marketing Head Benito Bengzon, Jr., Tokyo-based Tourism Attaché Val Cabansag and Osaka-based Tourism Attaché Araceli Soriano.
Confirming the DOT’s and local travel industry’s efforts, an expo survey ranked the Philippines as one of the top overseas dive destinations among the Japanese. Secretary Durano received the award from MDF organizer Akira Tateishi during the fair’s culminating ceremony.
“Our presence in Japan for this event is part of a bigger strategy to strengthen our visibility among the various segments of the Japanese tourist population. Aside from divers, the Department also plans to get a bigger share of active seniors and independent ladies. These groups consistently show the most enthusiasm and propensity for travel,” Durano explained.
The Tourism Chief further led the press launching of the 2008 Premium Resort Islands campaign for the Japanese travel sector, which applies the tagline “Kokoro Somaru” or “Color My Heart.”
The new campaign was unveiled at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Roppongi. More than 100 media representatives from Japan and the Philippines, and members of the Japanese travel industry witnessed the event, making it the DOT’s largest press conference to date.
Kokoro Somaru applies three main colors to highlight different aspects of the Philippine holiday experience. Turquoise blue symbolizes clear blue seas, diving, and calmness and relaxation; premium yellow calls out tropical fruits, healing and health from spas, the vibrancy of modern city life and energy of shopping and dining; and bright red speaks of romantic sunsets, resort life and the warmth of the Filipino people.
A special attraction of the campaign is the engagement of popular Japanese cultural icon Hello Kitty. As a special endorser for the Philippines, mascot will appear in the major travel and tourism events of the DOT in Japan. The Hello Kitty logo will likewise be used in brochures and other marketing items for Japanese travelers.
Joining Hello Kitty as the faces promoting the country is popular Japanese TV and movie personality Ms. Rin Takanashi. The actress will be gracing the Department’s destination posters and other materials.
Japan is currently the Philippines’ third leading source of foreign arrivals. A total of 65,901 Japanese nationals visited the islands between January and February this year, making up 11.5 percent of over-all tourist traffic.

DOT participation to Asia Dive Expo 2006 boosts RP dive sites and tourism Fresh from the success of the Philippines in the 2006 Marine Diving Fair in Tokyo, where it was voted as the Reader’s Choice ‘ 3rd world’s best dive site’ thru a diving magazine survey, the Department of Tourism further ensure its presence in the biggest Asia Dive Expo 2006 (ADEX) held in Suntec International Convention Exhibition Center in Singapore last month.
The country’s participation to ADEX 2006 was through the initiative of Ambassador Belen Anota of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore and Tourism Assistant Secretary for Sports and Wellness Cynthia Carreon.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said, “ADEX was an excellent opportunity for divers to discover and showcase our top dive spots, whether they are interested in recreational or technical diving.”
The ADEX 2006 attendance doubled the size of the last show in Singapore with a record of 9,200 visitors for the three-day show. Trade visitors totaled 1,600 and overall 39 countries represented the visitors and exhibitors. Apart from the Philippine Department of Tourism, the NTO’s and government entities represented were Bali Tourism Office , Brunei Tourism, East Timor, Maldives, Tourism Malaysia, Palau Visitors Authority, Sabah Tourism Promotion Corporation, Sarawak Tourism and the Tourism of Thailand.
The Philippine booth and delegation at ADEX 2006 was the biggest so far with 36 square meter space compared to the previous years, located in the left center part of Exhibition Hall 403 of the convention center. The relentless efforts of the DOT Singapore team headed by Tourism Attache Gerosel Siquian has kept the booth busy by answering queries and distributing promotional materials to visitors who came in drove to the WOW Philippines booth.
The imposing design of the DOT booth was itself an attraction to the public displaying an array of country’s dive sites beautifully arranged in a blue glossy paper lamination as backdrop. The public was given a glimpse of the country’s rich marine life thru a plasma monitor attached to a small replica of a nipa hut placed at the left side of the booth.
Topping the list of dive sites displayed in the booth were the Tubbataha Reef in Sulu Sea, declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO; Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, noted for its colorful corals, strong currents and big fishes; Balicasag Island in Bohol which contains schools of barracudas and jacks, banner and butterfly fishes, flatworms and hundreds of anemones; Anilao in Batangas, famous for its Cathedral Rock, Bahura and Beatrice Rock, Sepok Wall and Twin Rocks; Apo Island in Negros Oriental, popular for schools of jacks, humphead wrasses and several colonies of clownfishes; Malapascua Island, famous for thresher sharks and manta rays as well as several wrecks such as the Japanese warship, and passenger liner Dona Marilyn, which is conceivably the most beautiful wreck due to the profusion of dendronephyta and black coral bushes that cover most of the ship. Then there is Medina Paradise in Camiguin, famous due to the lush soft coral and the presence of big number of black coral trees. Of course, there is Palawan, declared as a nature sanctuary of the world. It boasts of exotic flora and fauna, like the mousedeer and the scaly antetear that are found nowhere else.
The Philippine delegation was composed of DOT Assistant Secretary Cynthia Carreon, Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) General Manager Robert Dean Barbers, and members of Team Asia-Pacific led by Rica Bueno. While, the private sector was joined by dive tour operators, resort owners, and divers were Gary Cases of Dive Link in Malapascua, Cebu; John Wee, president and owner of Scuba World; Louie Barrios, Expedition Fleet sales and marketing director; Allan Nash, Director of El Galleon; Joaquin Moras, general manager of Ticao Island Resort; and Scott Tuason, an award winning underwater photographer and journalist who authored a coffee table book on diving in the Philippines entitled Bahura.
There were considerable interests and leads based on inquiries and table top presentations for all the Philippine dive operators present including the new-comer, Ticao Island Resort in Masbate (near Donsol). Tubbataha received much more inquiries compared to the previous years. The others who obtained on-site bookings were El Galleon, Malapascua and Scuba World.
SeaQuest, El Galleon, Asia Divers and Balicasag Dive Resort offered several complete dive packages with international air tickets and all transfers. Each dive operator participant including PTA and Scuba World developed special dive packages for the Singapore market.

Simultaneous with the on-going activities in the booth, were seminars for recreational and technical diving. The Department of Tourism has invited Louie Barrios of Cruise Island Adventure and Expeditionfleet Liveaboards to discuss on recreational diving, otherwise known as shallow diving. According to Barrios, famous areas in the Philippines for recreational diving are Boracay, Balicasag in Bohol and Palawan. On the other hand, Martin Lorenzo, a member of the World
Exploration Dive Team, lectured on technical diving, and stated that many international technical diver instructors took their formal training in the Philippines specifically in Puerto Galera. He considered Anilao, Puerto Galera, Ormoc in Leyte, and Coron in Palawan as best areas for technical diving.
Participants from the private sector lauded the DOT and expressed their appreciation to the considerable effort and commitment of the government in supporting the dive industry.

| RP Welcomes More Underwater Photography Contests This Year |
Mar/14/2008 |
| |
|
RP Welcomes More Underwater Photography Contests This Year The Philippines is fast becoming a center for underwater photography as the country hosts two European diving competitions, as well as an international exhibit, this year.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “We are enthusiastic about welcoming divers from around the world to our shores. Activities like this help place the Philippines in the map of must-see scuba diving destinations. We attribute the influx of this market to the assertive and collaborative efforts of the Department and the private sector in reaching out to the water sports enthusiasts in Europe and other continents.”
The Department of Tourism (DOT) recently received a contingent of 36 Belgian and Dutch divers for the 15th Oceanic Underwater Photography Dive Competition at Coco Beach in Puerto Galera, Mindoro.
A major photo contest for the diving community and Belgium and the Netherlands, the Oceanic Cup is often held at the Red Sea in Egypt. This is the first time participants will be shooting in Philippine waters.
Harry Klerks, lead organizer for the Oceanic Cup and a multi-awarded underwater photographer, often found himself diving around Puerto Galera. The idea to hold the 2008 Oceanic Cup here was finalized with a simple “Why not?”
“There are many dive sites to choose from and the marine life is diverse, which is good for macro photography,” Klerks explained.
He added that the variety of sites and species offered by the Philippines has allowed him to expand the contest. A new award for videography is now up for grabs, in addition to the two traditional Starters and Masters photography categories.
Klerks further noted that facilities in the Philippines are also widely available, making it possible to accommodate large groups. He recounted that organizers restricted the number of participants for the Red Sea dive excursions because of the limited number of enough boats or that the vessels were too small.
“If all goes well, we’ll hold next year’s competition in Philippines again and bring in more divers, perhaps from Germany and other European countries,” Klerks said.
The DOT is confident that it can meet the rising demand. According to DOT Assistant Secretary and Executive Director of the Philippine Commission on Sports and Scuba Diving Cynthia Carrion, “our islands are naturally blessed with a wealth of spectacular marine vistas. On the top side, the government and private sectors are constantly upgrading the facilities to complement the warm and hospitable people ready to assist our underwater explorers.”
Following closely the Oceanic Cup is the 4th Atlantides Plongee Photo Competition, which will be held at the Atlantis Dive Resort in Dumaguete. The contest is quickly becoming one of the most coveted accolades among the French diving market.
The DOT is set to welcome over 25 French underwater photographers and videographers. Joining the group is Pierre Martin Razzi, Chief Editor of Sub Aqua Magazine, who will be part of this year’s jury.
The country will further host the 2008 Celebrate the Sea Marine Imagery Festival (CSMIF), the biggest underwater imaging event in Asia Pacific. Holding the said event is touted to strategically position the islands as the capital of aquatic photography and cinematography in Asia.

| World Economic Forum Hikes Up RP Tourism Industry’s Global Ranking |
Mar/14/2008 |
|
World Economic Forum Hikes Up RP Tourism Industry’s Global Ranking The World Economic Forum (WEF) has brought up the Philippine tourism industry's global ranking from 86th to 81st in its 2008 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report.
The World Economic Forum is a Geneva-based non-profit organization that advocates global development through partnerships with industry and policy leaders to address international and regional issues.
WEF’s yearly Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report measures the viability and attractiveness of the travel and tourism industry in 103 countries around the world. The 2008 survey puts particular focus on balancing economic development with environmental sustainability.
“The country’s moving up in rank confirms the efforts and the qualitative positive feedback that the local stakeholders and the Department have been receiving,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.
The WEF ranking is based on data from public records, international tourism institutions, industry experts, as well as results from an executive opinion survey. The gathered information is analyzed and applied to a scoring system, where seven ranks the highest.
The competitive index highlights a country’s tourism industry in factors such as regulatory framework, business environment and infrastructure, and available human, cultural and natural resources.
Based on the WEF study, the Philippines’ tourism industry ranks 81st among the 130 surveyed countries and scored 3.7 points in the overall competitive index.
The country earned 4.1 points in the regulatory framework index, which considers existing policy rules, environmental sustainability, security, health and the prioritization of the tourism industry in the national economy.
In terms of business environment and infrastructure, the Philippines was given a 3.2 score. Price competitiveness, a factor in this area, was marked at 5.5, and earned for the country the ninth spot in terms of global ranking.
Meanwhile, the island’s human, cultural and natural resources scored 3.8 points, with the availability of qualified labor earning the most points.
“The report provides policy makers and industry leaders with additional resources to help steer the industry in the right direction –what strengths to build up and highlight, as well as where we need to improve if we are to develop travel and tourism into a major economic driver and provider of livelihood for our people,” Durano emphasized.
According to the 2008 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, the WEF estimates the Philippine tourism industry to be worth $5.7 billion in 2007, reflecting a 4.4 percent annual growth and employing about 1.3 million people.
2007 was deemed a year of breakthroughs for the Department of Tourism as foreign visitor arrivals breached 3 millionth the mark to hit 3.09 million. Tourist expenditure was posted US$ 4.885 billion.

Revisitur’s cover features Cebu’s Plantation Bay Resort at dusk and carries the headline “The Philippines: A tropical paradise in the heart of Asia.” The 10-page full-color spread highlights the island’s history, unique and diverse culture, as well as the various adventure, nature and tropical beach destinations.
According to Ambassador Barsana, “The article depicts the Philippines as an enchanting tropical country that shares many similarities with Brazil, especially in climate, beautiful beaches, and a religiosity that is predominantly Catholic.”
She added that the embassy will pursue closer linkages through its membership with CNTUR, Brazil’s National Confederation for Tourism and the publisher of Revisitur.
Brazil is currently the leading source of tourists from the South American region. Visitor arrivals jumped by 16.1 percent in 2007 over the figures registered last year.
The Department of Tourism plans to further strengthen the country’s presence among South American travelers, in line with its 2008 goal to attract longer-staying, higher-spending tourists. |

DOT Lures American Diving Community to RP Seas In a bid to bring in more American divers to the Philippines, the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) Chicago office brought out the country’s colorful aquatic vistas at the recent 2008 Our World-Underwater Show (OW-U).
Considered the biggest and longest dive event in the US Midwest, the three-day expo drew in over 15,000 scuba diving professionals and enthusiasts, as well as travel trade business decision makers.
The Philippines was among the 150 dive travel operators, educators, dive equipment vendors and environmental groups showcased at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “Our participation at this year’s Our World-Underwater Show helps to strengthen our position in the American water sports market. The country’s ability to provide an exceptional diving experience lies in having one of the world’s most diverse marine life, as well as the warm smiles and hospitality that greet tourists above the surface.”
The country’s biggest, smallest, strangest and most colorful marine species and underwater seascapes served as the backdrop of the Philippine pavilion.
“Some of the showcased dive sites included Anilao in Batangas, Puerto Galera in Mindoro, Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete and Palawan. Our partner dive tour operators and resorts based in Chicago were very much pleased with the quality of discussions they were able to make with their counterparts and with interested consumers,” shared Vernie Velarde-Morales, Tourism Attaché for North America’s Central Region.
To further excite the American diving community, internationally published photographer, lecturer, environmentalist and dive travel leader Lynn Funkhouser headed the special expo seminar entitled Philippine Dive-rsity.
Funkhouser, an inaugural member of the Woman Divers Hall of Fame, has explored over 250 of the country’s underwater wonders over the past three decades. Her photographs of marine life indigenous to the islands were also showcased in the Philippine pavilion.
Also on display was award-winning dive coffee table book Anilao, a collaboration of Eduardo Cu Unijeng and Scott Tuazon. Likewise, Tuazon’s hardcover tome Bahura was on hand for visitors to browse through.
The DOT plans to strengthen diving and snorkeling as on of the top tourism products. Destinations that offer this adventure experience are now earning recognition around the world.
The John G. Shedd Aquarium’s Wild Reef exhibit in Chicago describes the Philippines’ underwater paradise as having a wide variety coral and fish species that number more than those in the Great Barrier Reef and the Hawaiian Reefs combined.
The Philippines was recently celebrated as the Destination of Honor at the 10th year anniversary of the Paris Dive Show, one of Europe’s longest-running and major scuba and water adventure events.
The country will further host the 2008 Celebrate the Sea Marine Imagery Festival (CSMIF), the biggest underwater imaging event in Asia Pacific. Holding the said event is touted to strategically position the islands as the capital of aquatic photography and cinematography in Asia. |

| DOT Gives P5 Million to Philippine Eagle Foundation |
Mar/14/2008 |
|
DOT Gives P5 Million to Philippine Eagle Foundation The Department of Tourism (DOT) has recently contributed P5 million for the construction of the new visitor lounge of the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City, a move which is expected to boost tourist arrivals in the center and help increase awareness on the country’s endangered species.
The support was presented to the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), a non-stock, non-profit organization, which is at the forefront of the campaign for the protection and conservation of the Philippine monkey-eating eagle (Pithecopaga jefferyi). The foundation also operates the center.
“The Philippine Eagle Center is one of the top attractions in Davao. The DOT’s sponsorship will strategically help improve the city as a tourist destination and allow the PEF attract more visitors and raise more revenues to help protect the endangered Philippine eagle,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano during his recent visit to the establishment.
Philippine Eagle Center Manager Elsa Delima reported that the old visitor lounge was already dilapidated and termite-infested. It was also deemed a fire hazard, limiting the number of visitors that can be attended to by the tour guides.
The new hall will house basic amenities meant to make the center more tourist-friendly, such as a dining area, kitchen and a gift souvenir shop. It will also hold an executive office and a scenic entrance area. The facility is expected to be operational by April 22, 2008 in time for this year’s celebration of Earth Day.
“The lounge will pave the way for better visitor accommodation and at the same time, will help the PEF reach a larger audience to promote wildlife conservation,” Delima said, adding that the center can now better accommodate its visitors, especially students on educational trips.
Estimates by the Philippine Eagle Foundation show that there are only 500 pairs of Philippine eagles left, mostly in the islands of Luzon, Samar and Leyte and various parts of Mindanao, including Davao.
The eight-hectare conservation facility currently nurses 36 Philippine eagles. It has successfully bred 22 eagles since January 1992.
As much as 100,000 tourists, mostly students and foreign nationals, visit the Philippine Eagle Center yearly. |

|
DOT expands Philippine presence in Taiwan The Department of Tourism (DOT) has expanded its reach in the Taiwan market with the recent exchanges with the travel trade players in the cities of Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “Taiwan has traditionally been one of the Philippines’ major trading and investment partners. Our strategy involves not only reinforcing our presence, but also offering something new and reaching out to travelers based outside Taipei.”
DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr. led the Philippine delegation on the week-long mission around Taiwan. He was accompanied by DOT Marketing Head for Team Asia Pacific Rica Bueno and Tourism Attaché to Taiwan Rene Reyes.
The Philippines being Taiwan’s closest tropical beach destination, the sun and surf was the main offering at the Philippine pavilion during the Taipei International Travel Fair (TITF).
Taiwan’s largest tourism event drew in over a hundred thousand business decision makers and potential travelers this year. A total of 861 organizations from 62 countries and regions set up shop in 23,500 square meter exhibit hall at the Taipei World Trade Center.
“The private sector participants were very pleased with how the fair turned out. Not only were they able to align with their Taiwanese counterparts, they also generated business with the tourists who booked their Philippine holiday on-site. One agent was able to make Boracay bookings for as much as 60 people,” DOT Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr. revealed.
Concurrent to the fair, DOT representatives met with Taiwan’s top travel media outfits such as Travel Trend News, World Travel Weekly, Pacific Daily and Travel Rich to augment the promotional activities in the frontline. ICRT Radio, a leading broadcast station, set up a special on-air interview.
Widely-circulated newspaper Apple Daily ran the headline: “Enjoy your vacation: start with the nearest country –the Philippines.”
On-the-spot trivia games were held during fair hours, lending more hype for the Philippines. Prizes included Cebu Pacific air tickets and Philippine-made crafts.
A special Philippine Tourism Gala was held at the Shangri-la Far Eastern Hotel to celebrate the renewed marketing activities to the Taiwanese market. The event was graced by Manila Economic and Cultural Office Ambassador Antonio Basilio and Taiwan Transportation Minister Duei Tsai.
“This special dinner allowed us to align with the travel officials and influentials of Taiwan and see how the two countries can cooperate in developing each other’s tourism industry,” shared Tourism Attaché to Taiwan Rene Reyes.
Bi-lateral meetings with several Taiwanese airlines were set, opening the possibility of creating more charter flights from either Kaohsiung or Taichung to Laoag, Batanes and other gateways to major Philippine tourist attractions.
Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s second largest city located in the southern part of the country. Taichung lies on the west-central area and the third most populous.
The Philippine contingent further held travel exchanges at these two cities, where 15 travel wholesalers and other tourism establishments met with Taiwanese counterparts.
Travel agencies Jeron Travel and Tours, Island World Travel, Shyang Fong Travel Service, and Happy Sun Travel and Tours presented their beach and water sport packages. Meanwhile, Faithfully Travel and Cebu ESL showcased the Philippines as an ideal place to learn English.
Patio Pacific, Dos Palmas, El Nido, Boracay Regency, Waterfront Cebu, and Bohol Beach Club featured their amenities and services. The Philippine Retirement Authority promoted the country as a retirement haven. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific presented their various flight services.
“Many of the Taiwanese operators were interested in including Boracay and Palawan in their packages, as these are relatively new destinations for their clients,” said DOT Marketing Head for Team Asia Pacific Rica Bueno.
To further build up on the enthusiasm for the country’s beach destinations, the DOT took part in the formal launching of a Boracay guidebook in the Mandarin language. The publication features popular Taiwanese TV personality and model Kelly (Xiao Xian).
Taiwan is currently the country’s sixth leading source of tourists globally and the fourth in the Asian region. A total of 112,206 Taiwanese nationals visited the islands in 2007. The DOT plans to bring up the figures and strengthen the country’s presence in this market in 2008.

DOT Lights Up Summer Sky with World Pyro Olympics Summer nights in the city will explode with color and music as the Department of Tourism (DOT) and La Mancha Pyro Productions are set to stage the 2008 World Pyro Olympics this April at the Esplanade Area of the SM Mall of Asia.
The largest international classical fireworks competition in the world, the World Pyro Olympics is the arena where the best pyrotechnic firms from around the globe compete in a display of technical expertise and artistic skill.
This year’s competition brings together nine teams deemed the best of the best in their home country. World Pyro Olympics III opens on April 5 with presentations from China and Germany.
Japan and Canada will display their works on April 12. Contenders from Italy and Venezuela will take the stage on April 19. France and Korea will present on April 26, while Australia’s show will be on May 3.
A special Philippine display on May 3 shall fired by La Mancha Pyro Productions, the producer and organizer of the World Pyro Olympics.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “Hosting the World Pyro Olympics strategically makes the Philippines a destination for international events. This is the competition’s third year and has since grown into a major activity that the international community looks forward to. Naturally, it also benefits the Philippines in terms of increased economic activity.”
The tourism chief further revealed that organizers have observed heightened business activity since the first World Pyro Olympics was held in 2005, which drew in an audience of over 1.2 million. Last year’s event brought in an estimated 2.5 million warm bodies.
Each year, hotels in Pasay, Makati and Manila experience increased occupancy. Restaurants and establishments along the vicinity are filled with thousands of spectators awaiting to catch the displays. Droves of vehicles from all over Metro Manila, together with bus loads of tourists coming from nearby provinces, travel to Pasay City.
“Our new weekend schedule format aims to encourage more domestic and foreign tourists to attend. By having the displays on Saturdays, we give enough time for short haul travelers to fly in to Manila,” said La Mancha Pyro Productions Chairman Ricardo Crisostomo.
The DOT and La Mancha are currently coordinating with the Pasay local government, as well as the police and other authorities for special traffic schemes and security measures required by the five-day activity. |

| Advisory: Creation of the Civil Aviation Authority (as of 12:00nn, Friday, 01 February 2008) |
Feb/01/2008 |
|
Advisory: Creation of the Civil Aviation Authority (as of 12:00nn, Friday, 01 February 2008) The Senate and House of Representatives are in the final stages of passing a bill that will create the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Once enacted into law, the CAA will replace the Air Transportation Office.
The bi-cameral conference committee is confident that the launch of the fiscally autonomous CAA will upgrade the Philippines’ air transport safety services to international standards, most especially now that foreign arrivals are expected to increase. It is further said that this will compel the United States Federal Aviation Administration to revert the Philippines’ air transport safety rating to Category 1.
According to Secretary Ace Durano of the Department of Tourism (DOT), “I echo the disappointment of the tourism sector over the fact that the Department was excluded from being a member of the governing board of the CAA. The interest of tourism in the country’s civil aviation sector is obvious and its membership in the CAA logical.”
Secretary Durano is set to formally request Bohol 1st District Congressman Edgardo Chatto and Senator Richard Gordon to remedy the situation by incorporating the DOT’s membership in the CAA into the pending tourism bills.

| DOT Serves Up Culinary Tourism Anew |
Feb/27/2008 |
|
DOT Serves Up Culinary Tourism Anew The Department of Tourism (DOT) has renewed its call for travelers to practically eat their way around the country with its Kulinarya Program. First launched in 2005, the culinary tourism project now offers more food trips and will soon launch a guide book on Philippine cuisine.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “Culinary tourism provides a different way to experience a particular destination. It allows visitors to fully engage themselves in Philippine culture by way of our food traditions.”
The DOT has recently finalized a roster of 13 Kulinarya Food Trips. Day tours include Quezon Province, Batangas-Cavite, Pampanga-Bulacan and Binondo. Itineraries for Ilocos, Bicol, Cebu, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Boracay, Davao and Dakak take as much as three days and two nights.
The Department has accredited tour operators Trips Travel, Southeast Travel, Sharp Travel Service, Rajah Tours, Nexus Travel, CCT 168 Travel and Tours, Baron Travel and Action Holidays Tours to offer the specialized packages.
Food samplings – a combination of breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-between snacks- are the centerpiece of each tour. These are enhanced by sight-seeing and photo opportunities of the locale’s cultural and natural attractions. Many trips also involve a visit to the local market, farm or food processing plant, giving insight to the ingredients that make up the dish. Pasalubong shopping breaks allow one to fill up on special goodies to take home.
Cooking demonstrations offer a rare opportunity to learn from master chefs and keepers of time-honored family recipes. These informal sessions are often conducted in ancestral homes, remaining true to the Filipino brand of hospitality.
Pampangueno historian and culinary master Lilia Borromeo will give tourists a chance to bake San Nicholas cookies in her kitchen. Quezon Province pottery artist Ugu Bigyan opens his studio and dining area for morning snacks.
Tourists will also get the chance to meet the owners of the oldest recipes for La Paz batchoy and molo soup in Iloilo, as well as Sorsogon’s creator of sweetened pili nuts wrapped in leaves.
Durano revealed that the DOT is currently developing other tours, including fine-dining escapades around the country.
In a bid to put Filipino food in the map of international cuisine, the DOT will launch this year Kulinarya: A Guide to Philippine Cooking. Edited by food columnist Mikaela Fenix, the cook book is a collaboration of celebrated Filipino chefs Claude Tayag, Glenda Barreto, Myrna Segismundo, Jessie Sinsioco, Conrad Calalang and Margarita Fores.
The food manual is a joint project of the DOT, Asia Society, San Miguel Corporation, Del Monte Corporation, Anvil Publishing and the Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines.
“The Kulinarya guide includes recipes for dishes that best define Philippine flavors. This project aims to provide a standard method of preparing, cooking and plating well-loved Filipino food that can be shared even abroad. We envision halo-halo and adobo to be as popular as sushi and apple pie in the global menu,” Durano said.

The business-to-business exchanges will occur successively at the Konserthus in Oslo, Norway, the Konferens Spårvagnshallarna in Stockholm, Sweden, and at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark from March 9 to 16.
As of this report, tour operators Annset Holidays, Baron Travel, Intas Destination Management, Rajah Tours and Travel, and T.R.I.P.S. Travel are set conduct tabletop meetings with their counterparts for joint marketing promotions.
Likewise, Sampaguita Resort will highlight the country’s world-renowned diving attractions to the watersports sector. Philippine Airlines is set to showcase the various access points to the country, as well as their own package tours.
Dos Palmas Resort and Spa, El Nido Resorts, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa, Microtel Inns and Suites Boracay, and Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa will present their amenities and services.
Members of the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company will give the travel trade representatives a glimpse into the country’s culture and festivities with daily song and dance performances.
The world-renowned cultural group will also be staging shows at the Nybrokajen National Theatre in Stockholm.
DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Services and Regional Offices Oscar Palabyab will lead the Philippine delegation.
“The selling mission closely follows the ITB Berlin, which is the biggest international tourism fair. We will be building from the excitement brought on by this event, bearing in mind whatever insights we have learned about the Scandinavian market during the ITB,” Durano noted.
Visitor arrivals from Norway, Sweden and Denmark grew by 18.7 percent, 21.2 percent and 23.6 percent in 2007 respectively. The DOT is confident that the travel exchanges with these countries will increase tourist traffic and contribute to the department’s target of 3.4 foreign travelers by end of 2008.

| Philippines was destination of choice for Chinese New Year |
Feb/12/2008 |
|
Philippines was destination of choice for Chinese New Year The Philippines stood as this year’s Lunar New Year holiday destination of choice among an increasing amount of Chinese tourists. This was revealed through reports by Taipei-based travel agents and supported by data from the Philippine embassy and consulates in China.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “This clearly indicates that the Chinese travel market finds our various destinations very attractive. The combined efforts of the Philippine travel industry and the Department are working beyond what we expected.”
Initial reports from 12 tour operators in Taipei show that packages covering Cebu, Bohol, Manila, Tagaytay, Boracay and Palawan were popular among Chinese nationals spending a week-long New Year holiday overseas. Bookings have reached as much as 62 people per tour group.
“Based on the destinations chosen, the tourists would opt for places that offer a good mix of tropical beaches, cultural attractions and interesting historical sites. What makes the Philippines stand out is that we can provide all this in one location,” said Rica Bueno, Department of Tourism (DOT) Marketing Head for Team Asia Pacific.
Bueno’s group coordinates with the country’s travel trade players, as well as the tourism attaches and diplomatic corps in Taiwan to implement assertive marketing initiatives such as travel exchanges with Chinese tour operators, trade exhibits and the launch of more charter flights.
Likewise, DOT’s Marketing Team for China, headed by Arlene Alipio, executes similar activities to reach the mainland China tourist market, which has been growing over the recent years and considered as one of the strongest in the world.
“Our alignments with the Chinese media also resulted in numerous articles about Philippine tourist attractions appearing in various local newspapers, magazines and television programs. These strategically helped in placing images and facts about our islands among the millions of Chinese audiences that we otherwise cannot reach,” Alipio noted.
Philippine Ambassador to China Sonia Brady added to this, saying that visits of top-ranking Philippine officials, particularly President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s trip last year, played a key role in promoting the country to Chinese nationals.
“They show that Philippine-China relations have reached a higher level of partnership,” Brady stressed.
Data from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing show that the number of visas issued in January 2008 grew by 229 percent compared to the same period last year.
China is currently the country’s fourth largest source of foreign arrivals. A total of 157,601 Chinese tourists visited the country in 2007, providing 5.1 percent of over-all tourist traffic. |

| DOT: Embassies crucial in attracting tourists to RP |
Jan/30/2008 |
|
DOT: Embassies crucial in attracting tourists to RP Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano recently applauded the Philippine embassies in helping the Department of Tourism encourage tourists and businessmen to visit the country, highlighting their crucial role in building the economy.
The statement follows the write-up on Philippine tourist attractions in the December 2007 issue of Brazilian magazine Viajar. The feature is part of the on-going initiative of the Philippine Embassy in Brazil, headed by Ambassador Teresita Barsana, to present the country to prospective investors and holiday-seekers.
“I appreciate the work that our diplomatic corps are doing to contribute positively to the tourism industry. The Department has the materials and resources to assist the Philippine embassies in effectively promoting the islands to a specific travel sector,” said Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano.
Viajar is a leading Portuguese-language publication that caters to the travel and business industries. The magazine is produced by Brazil’s National Confederation for Tourism (CNTUR), one of the largest travel industry associations in this country and of which the Philippine Embassy in Brazil maintains active membership.
Viajar dedicates six full-color pages to highlight the country’s history, unique and diverse culture, as well as the various adventure, nature and tropical beach destinations. Translated, the headline describes the Philippines to have “Tropical vistas spread out in more than 7107 islands, a paradise in the heart of Asia.”
According to Ambassador Barsana, the Philippines as a holiday destination shows promise since it “shares many similarities with Brazil, especially in climate, has beautiful beaches, and a religiosity that is predominantly Catholic.”

| Foreign arrivals via cruise ship rising |
Feb/12/2008 |
|
Foreign arrivals via cruise ship rising The Department of Tourism (DOT) is expecting a sharp rise in visitor arrivals via cruise ship in 2008. The announcement follows the department’s welcome of 1,595 passengers on board MV Costa Allegra during its first two calls to Manila this year.
“MV Costa Allegra is one of several cruise liners that have recently included the Philippines in their itinerary. The DOT is currently coordinating with our partners in the private sector to position the country as a major Asian destination for those travelling by sea and increase arrivals from this particular group,” Tourism Secretary Ace Durano explained.
The DOT’s ongoing program for cruise ships dropping anchor at Pier 13 of the South Harbor, Manila include a Masskara street dance and brass band to welcome the visitors. Souvenir leis and information materials are distributed to those taking day tours. Pangkat Kawayan, an orchestra that plays indigenous bamboo instruments, has been tapped for the farewell number at the end of the day.
Tour operator Travel People organized day visits around Corregidor, Tagaytay, historic Manila and a special shopping trip. According to tour organizers, more than half of the passengers availed of the guided trips, while others opted to explore Manila on their own.
The MV Costa Allegra has increased their stopovers to the Philippines from 10 in 2007 to 14 this year, by far the most frequent by a single vessel. Three visits are already scheduled in March.
Each voyage would have as much as 800 tourists on board, comprised mostly of British, French, Spanish, Italian and other European nationals.
The world-renowned Italian cruise provider features the country in two of its Asian programs, namely Treasures of the Far East and Jewels of the Far East. Both courses include stops in China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Korea and Japan. |

| DOT Supports New River Cruise in Mindanao |
Mar/14/2008 |
|
DOT Supports New River Cruise in Mindanao Beginning this year, travelers seeking to explore the wonders of the Mindanao region will have a new destination to visit as the local government of Butuan City, with the support of the Department of Tourism (DOT), introduces new cruises along the Agusan River, the third longest river in the country.
A special highlight of the attraction is that visitors will be sailing on board a replica of a balanghai. This early form of water vessel dates back to 320 AD, some of which have been found in Butuan.
Speaking at the sidelights of the celebration of the 13th Araw ng CARAGA, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said “the proposed project will surely help boost the tourism industry not only in Butuan but also in the nearby CARAGA provinces.”
“We are always on the lookout for great projects for tourists and this is one of them. We believe that this will be a great attraction both to local and foreign visitors because of the historical value of the balanghais,” he added.
Durano further revealed that the DOT provided support to the city government of Butuan worth P2.5 million to ensure immediate operation of the cruise. Stopover stations and other infrastructure are currently undergoing improvements.
“Once operational, the Agusan river cruise will be one of the major Philippine attractions that will be featured in the DOT’s Adventure Philippines campaign, which promotes the country as a haven for other fun-filled adventure activities,” the Tourism Chief shared.
The two new 30-seater balanghais will initially run along an 800-meter section of the Agusan. The vessels will be designed to have a dining area for the comfort of the tourists.
Designated breaks allow for dining and shopping for indigenous products. The trip will also stop at the Balanghai Shrine Museum where pre-colonial Balanghais were first excavated.
“In the long run, the local government will encourage private sector participation for the further development of the river stops and the construction of additional balanghais that will go down the Agusan,” DOT CARAGA Regional Director Leonides Theresa B. Plaza noted.
Butuan’s river cruise project is touted to further promote CARAGA as a major tourist destination in Mindanao. At present, the region is best known for the surfing activities in the island of Siargao in Surigao del Norte.
The CARAGA region includes the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. |

Touted to be the biggest underwater imaging event in Asia Pacific, last year's CSMIF was held at the Coconut Palace in Manila and drew in a global audience comprised of professional and amateur photographers and filmmakers, environmentalists and diving experts.
Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, said, "Supporting the CSMIF strengthens our place in the map of international water sports sites. This allows us to encourage more divers and nature adventurers to experience the country's diverse marine life."
Working with the DOT in presenting the CSMIF 2008 are the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD) and Ocean Environment Australia. Event organizers have collaborated to hold the fair in the Philippines until 2009.
"We are very excited about this year's event as we will be setting up in the country's very first oceanarium. This is definitely a festival that visitors will enjoy as they learn more about the wonders under the sea," expressed Cynthia Carrion, DOT Assistant Secretary and Executive Director of the PCSSD.
The main highlight of CSMIF is the International Underwater Imagery Competition, the biggest marine imaging contest in the Asia Pacific region. Various macro, wide angle and black and white photographs, digital images, short videos, full-length documentary films and books on ocean life will be on exhibit during the three-day festival.
Event organizers have invited some of the top marine scientists and image makers for a series of seminars and presentations. Officiating the festival is Daniel Mercier, founder of the World Festival of Underwater Pictures.

DOT: Puerto Princesa Green Efforts to Boost Tourism Photo shows Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and Senator Loren Legarda as the quintessential backseat drivers of the prototype of Karusel, a human-powered mini-train recently unveiled at the Puerto Princesa City Baywalk in Palawan. Looking at the pedal gears is co-passenger Dutch Ambassador Robert Brinks.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) reiterated its support for ecological programs undertaken at the local government level when Tourism Secretary Ace Durano joined in the recent inauguration of a human-powered mini-train prototype in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.
“Palawan is the country’s top eco-tourism destination. Any project that aims to reduce pollution and protect the environment will only strengthen the city’s position as a top-of-mind choice among nature lovers,” Durano said.
Dubbed the Karusel, the mini-train prototype runs along a light-weight track and powered by passengers working a pedal mechanism much like that of a bicycle or paddle boat. The single six-seater cabin will initially travel the stretch of the Puerto Princesa Bay Walk, the city’s entertainment promenade.
The Karusel is touted to be the first of its kind in the world. The gas-free alternative vehicle is the brain child of environmental lawyer Antonio Oposa Jr. of the Law of Nature Foundation.
The local government of Puerto Princesa, under the helm of Mayor Edward Hagedorn, is currently studying the viability of using the Karusel to run along the main arteries of the city.
The launch of the Karusel prototype was one of the activities of Puerto Princesa’s ecology-themed celebration called Love Affair with Nature. The occasion included planting mangrove seedlings and propagules, an inter-faith prayer assemble to save the province from the negative effects of mining and opening of an art exhibit staged by National Artists and local Palawan painters and sculptors.
“The Department is always enthusiastic about projects that uphold the integrity of an area’s top attraction. For Palawan, it’s the breathtaking natural resources that constantly make it a poster destination,” Durano stressed.
The Tourism Chief further announced that the DOT will support Palawan’s eco-tourism initiative by developing Puerto Princesa City as the international gateway to the province. Already, plans are underway to upgrade the airport terminal, runway, instruments and other facilities.
Palawan was earlier categorized as “doing well” in the fourth Destination Scorecard survey conducted by the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations. The review noted the archipelago’s steadily improving conservation efforts. Further, El Nido’s resorts in Lagen and Miniloc islands have claimed a spot in Travel + Leisure magazine’s 20 top eco-sensitive hotels. |

| RP Resorts Land in ASEAN Inaugural List of Green Hotels |
Mar/27/2008 |
|
RP Resorts Land in ASEAN Inaugural List of Green Hotels Two luxury resorts in the Philippines – the El Nido Resorts in Lagen and Miniloc islands, and the Shangri-La Island Resort Mactan – are among the 81 properties in the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) region to receive the Green Hotel recognition given by the ASEAN member countries at its recent forum in Bangkok, Thailand.
According Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “The recognition earned by these hotels should serve to encourage other tourism facilities and establishments to think of the environmental impact of their daily activities and find ways to protect the immediate community to which they belong.”
The tourism chief added that undertaking ecologically-sound activities will further help hotels and resorts save thousands of dollars in operational costs monthly.
The ASEAN defines a “green hotel” as one that “is environmentally- friendly and adopts energy conservation measures.”
The Green Hotel recognition is given to lodges and other accommodations that meet the ASEAN’s 11-point standard. The criteria covers having an environmental policy and actions for hotel operation, use of green products, collaboration with the community and local organizations, human resource development geared towards environmental management, solid waste management, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor and outdoor air quality management, noise pollution control, waste water treatment and management, toxic and chemical substance disposal and management.
The Green Hotel standard was conceptualized to help the 10 member countries, namely Brunei Durussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, develop and promote the region into a single quality destination.
The Tourism Standards Taskforce has further created benchmarks for food and beverage services, public restrooms, home stay accommodations, ecotourism destinations and activities, and tourism heritage sites.
With the initial recognition of the Green Hotels in the region, ASEAN officials plan to award restaurants, shops and other tourism establishments and enterprises in the future to encourage an environmentally responsible industry. |

| Philippines is Scuba Diving Magazine’s Top Value Dive Destination |
Mar/18/2008 |
|
Philippines is Scuba Diving Magazine’s Top Value Dive Destination The Philippines earned top rank in the Top Value Destination for the Pacific and Indian Ocean Region category in the 2007 Top 100 Readers’ Choice Survey published in the January 2008 issue of Scuba Diving Magazine, the most widely read publication for scuba diving enthusiasts in the United States.
Garnering a near-perfect score of 96.6 points, the Philippines bested other destinations in the Pacific and Indian Ocean region such as Palau, Indonesia, Fiji, Truk, Galapagos, the Egyptian Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, Cocos Island of Costa Rica, and Hawaii’s Oahu and Maui as the top diving getaway that guarantees value for money.
Scuba Diving’s Reader’s Choice survey results also showed that the islands ranked second and third in the Top Macro Life and Top Dive Destination categories respectively.
The country further consistently landed in the top five list for best Marine Life, Healthiest Marine Environment, Wall Diving, Shore Diving, Underwater Photography and Advance Diving.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “The positive survey result helps to further strengthen our country’s position as Asia’s diving capital. Great news such as this should only encourage our coastal communities to support scuba diving as an option for sustainable development in their area.”
Scuba Diving Magazine holds a monthly circulation of 180,000 around the US. The yearly poll asked their readers on the different locations, dive operators, resorts or live-aboard experiences they have had in 2007.
Executive Editor Keith Phillips said that the survey answers give their readers and the public in general, “an idea of what divers as a whole are thinking.”
The Philippines is known to have the widest variety of oceanic species in the world. The popular must-try dive sites around the islands include Anilao in Batangas, Puerto Galera in Mindoro Oriental, Cabilao and Balicasag Islands in Bohol, Crocodile Island in Boracay, Apo Island in Negros Oriental, Mactan, Malapascua and Olango Islands in Cebu, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tubbataha Reef in Palawan.
Also popular among experienced and amateur divers are the world-famous wreck diving destinations in Coron, Palawan and Subic Bay, Zambales.
“The results of our market study in 2007 showed that the highest awareness about the Philippines was registered among American divers. It is also significant to note that a good percentage of them actually came to the country to enjoy our underwater wonders,” shared DOT Team North America Head Ma. Corazon Jorda-Apo.
Scuba diving is one of the three marketing promotional thrusts of the Department of Tourism (DOT) to the American and Canadian travel market. The other two highlights include wellness and spa, and adventure tourism.
The United States is currently the Philippines’ second leading source of tourists. Visitor arrivals from this country reached 58,486 in January 2008, contributing 19.9 percent to overall foreign travel traffic.
The Department is optimistic that the country will maintain its strong presence in North American market, and will continue to capitalize on the 1.8 to 2 million-strong U.S. dive community. |

| DOT Explores Indian Business Travel Opportunities |
May/12/2008 |
|
DOT Explores Indian Business Travel Opportunities The Department of Tourism (DOT) has announced its plans to extend its reach into the Indian travel market by tapping into this country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events (MICE) sector.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, “India’s growing economy brings with it a greater demand for business travel and related activities. This is on top of the more general tourist population, which comprise mainly of families. The Department is pushing for the local tourism industry to claim a significant share of this promising sector.”
The DOT has recently organized a travel exchange for Indian tour operators specializing in MICE to meet with local industry players. The one-day activity held in Manila allowed both parties to explore joint undertakings to encourage more businesses in India to consider the Philippines for their next out-of-town corporate event.
The Indian MICE travel wholesalers included RAMS, Journeys and Destination, TBI Travel, Wanders, Make My Trip, SURV, Travel Experts, N.Chirag and Welgrow Travel Pvt. Ltd.
The industry meet-and-greet was part of a week-long ocular tour of the various MICE facilities and services available in Manila, Subic, Cebu and Boracay.
“While the Indian businessman is well-traveled, the Philippines is considered a very new destination. Our group found that the business and convention venues are good. The beach destinations are wonderful and the people are very friendly. There are more than enough shopping, entertainment and other leisure activities available to cover the average three to five-day itinerary,” shared Vikrand Grover of RAMS.
The DOT’s Team India, tasked to promote the island’s various tourist attractions to the Indian travel market, consequently conducted a similar itinerary and industry conference for top-level management of Indian companies that conduct regular overseas incentive tours and conventions.
“On top of the promotional activities like the inspection trips, we are also looking into ways to make the Philippines more accessible to the Indian traveler. This includes improving flight availability,” revealed DOT Team India Head Glen Agustin.
Agustin added that the local tourism industry has successfully assisted the four-day conference of ABN Amro Bank India’s Corporate Incentive Group and the investor exchange of the Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry last year.
Based on the positive feedback from the delegates and the tour operators, the DOT is confident that the Philippines can meet the expectations of MICE organizers and specialists.
The DOT is also presenting the country’s shopping, entertainment and beach attractions to Indian families and holiday makers. Manila and Cebu are the highlighted destinations since these are considered as the more cosmopolitan centers that will appeal to the market.
The Department is further in talks with producers and key decision makers in the Mumbai film industry, more popularly known as Bollywood, in line with its Film Tourism program.
The said campaign showcases the various islands as the perfect setting for movies, TV shows, music videos and other media projects. Film Tourism also highlights the country’s state-of-the-art production facilities and capable technical crew ready to assist foreign outfits.
Foreign arrivals from India between January and February 2008 grew by 19 percent over the same period in 2007. |

| RP keeps edge in Korean ESL market |
May/12/2008 |
|
RP keeps edge in Korean ESL market The Philippines is still the best place to learn English as far as the Korean student market is concerned. The Department of Tourism (DOT) shared that over 100 thousand Koreans flew to the country last year for various English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and other study tours.
The Department expects this number to increase significantly this year, as attested by the quality and quantity of inquiries it received during the recent 26th Korea Student and Emigration Fair held at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul, Korea.
According to Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, “The Korean overseas learning sector accounts for around five million people. This includes mainly those who want to acquire skills that will help them participate in the global economy. Our participation at the Korea Student Fair focused on claiming a bigger share of this highly specialized group. It further served as the top venue for our partner educational institutions to see up close the demand and the opportunities that come with it.”
The 26th Korea Student and Emigration Fair is considered the main event for Korean students, parents and teachers looking into learning prospects abroad. It is further touted as the one-stop-shop for information and advice on overseas study from experienced Korean and foreign educators. Interested parties may also book into the many outbound learning tours available during the two-day expo.
The spring edition of this biannual expo saw more than 50,000 visitors walking through the stalls of 671 exhibitors from 20 countries.
The Philippine participation included representatives from the Philippine Embassy in Korea and Philippine Airlines. Partner educational institutions showcasing their ESL programs were Best Cella, Cebu Pacific International Language School, MTM Cebu Languages Institute, E-Deun Academy, Lingua Inter Pret Academy, Enderun College and I Can Language Center.
To further encourage more tourists, Philippine Airlines raffled out round-trip tickets to those who have confirmed their enrollment into any of the Philippine study-abroad packages.
“Students took up 17 percent of the 653,310 Koreans who came to the country in 2007. The Department and our partners in the private sector are working towards building up our presence as the top-of-mind preference of overseas ESL learning. Conversely, the tourism and educational industries need to further improve the level of our facilities and services, such as discouraging fly-by-night operations and ensuring the safety of our visitors,” Durano elaborated.
ESL programs from schools based in Baguio, Manila, Iloilo, Cagayan Valley and Cebu are currently the most popular.
The Korean overseas study market can be broken down in three categories. The first group comprises of youth who enroll in two-month ESL programs that coincide with their summer or winter breaks. The second set makes up of students who enter into the regular course offerings of international schools and universities in the Philippines.
The third and most specialized outbound segment includes Koreans who intend to learn English used in particular fields, such as medicine and nursing. Packages for ESL as applied in golf, diving and other areas of interest are also in the menu of several tour wholesalers.
“Our close proximity to their home country and competitive package prices make the Philippines a top choice among Korean students. These two factors make it easy for them to have a parent accompany them, which they consider very important,” shared Korea-based Tourism Attaché Maricon Ebron.
Pam Samaniego, DOT Team Korea Marketing Head, added, “The fact that seeing many English-speaking Filipinos, especially in the cities where ESL for foreigners are offered, further brings up their level of confidence in choosing the Philippines.”
Korea is currently the country’s top source of foreign arrivals. A total of 126,354 Korean nationals landed in the Philippines between January and February this year, making up 22.1 percent of over-all tourist traffic. |

| Philippines to join Shanghai World Expo 2010 |
May/12/2008 |
|
Philippines to join Shanghai World Expo 2010 The Department of Tourism (DOT) has confirmed the Philippine participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010, one of the world’s major venues for the exchange of global economic thought and strengthening of cross-border ties.
The country’s attendance to the event was formally set as Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism, signed the contract during ceremonies recently held at the headquarters of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau.
“We plan to make this the grandest pavilion that we have ever installed as far as joining international fairs is concerned. China is one of the world’s major economies and being at the Shanghai Expo serves as a vital step for the country to claim a significant part of the Chinese outbound tourist sector, as well as a good share of international visitors,” Durano shared.
Durano was further designated as the Philippine Commissioner General to this major trade and economic exposition.
The Shanghai World Expo 2010 will carry the theme “Better City, Better Life,” harping on the common goal towards enhanced urban environments. The event aims to encourage a harmonious blend of diverse cultures, economic prosperity, innovation and technology, sustainable communities and healthy interaction between urban and rural areas.
The Shanghai World Expo 2010 is scheduled to open its gates on May 1, 2010 up until October 31, 2010. The Chinese coordination bureau has cordoned off an area of 5.28 square kilometers around the Nanpu and Lupu Bridges. This is touted to be the largest space allotted in the fair’s history.
Organizers expect to draw in more than 70 million guests and 200 exhibitors from around the world to Shanghai, breaking the 64 million visitor record set at Osaka, Japan in 1970.
Also held previously in the United States and various countries in Europe, the World Expo provides national organizations and private companies with a venue to showcase their trade activities, culture, technology and tourist destinations.
The Philippines is the 16th country to confirm its participation and will be among 42 Asian countries setting up at the fair grounds. The DOT has reserved a 1,880 square-meter space to carry the theme “Performing Cities.”
“Our theme statement attempts to show how Filipino culture, artistry and music influence the design, planning, management and sustainability of our communities. It will be a multi-sensory display of our country’s values like bayanihan and our world-famous brand of hospitality,” Durano said.
He added that the hall will feature cultural and trade exhibits, food sampling courtesy of the Philippine Travel Café, an indigenous arts and crafts showroom, a spa center highlighting hilot and other wellness treatments, a performance area, as well as seminars and forums on the country’s different industries.
The center will further touch on the shared history of the Filipino and Chinese people, from racial ancestry and social influences to current business relations and joint economic programs.
The Department is working with the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation in designing and executing the installation and promotional activities. |

Philippine Tourism Scores in the Sporting Fields The Philippines has been attracting a lot of attention recently as a world-class tourist destination, not only in travel markets, but also on the playing fields of popular sports such as football and tennis.
The country was featured as a tourist destination in two recent events. During the international friendly match between England and Trinidad & Tobago at the latter’s capital Port of Spain, held on June 1, a huge streamer with the now familiar WOW Philippines advertisement was proudly displayed along the pitch in full view of thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers.
During the Women’s International Tennis Championship held in Eastbourne, England from June 12 to 15, a very visible “Adventure Philippines” in several square meters of big bold signage was emblazoned against the bright blue wall at one end of the grass court, and could be seen throughout the three days of matches broadcast by BBC1, BBC2 and BBCinteractive.
DOT Philippines London office headed by Tourism Attaché Domingo Enerio III was able to get a very reasonable rate for the advertisement and airtime in the two sporting events, considering the international exposure given Philippine tourism’s promotion.
This kind of exposure is only one of many projects being pursued by the Department of Tourism to spread further afield in Europe and in neighboring areas the good news about the best value-for-money destination in Southeast Asia, which is the Philippines.

| PDOT London leads Embassy participation in Philippines Barrio Fiesta |
Jul/11/2008 |
|
PDOT London leads Embassy participation in Philippines Barrio Fiesta This years marks the 24th edition of the highly popular Barrio Fiesta sa London, held at Lampton Park in Hounslow. Often described as the biggest Filipino festival of its kind outside the Philippines, the annual barrio fiesta regularly attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the United Kingdom, and from nearby countries as well.
The Philippines Department of Tourism London office headed by Tourism Attaché Domingo Enerio III will again be spearheading the regular participation in the fiesta by the Philippine Embassy, according to DOT public relations officer Chit Afuang.
This will be another opportunity for DOT-London to encourage the British public to witness and enjoy the colorful ways of traditional Filipino merry-making and unique Malayan-Hispanic cultural traditions. The tourism office has also invited UK tour operators selling Philippine packaged leisure and vacation tours; members of British media who have already been to the Philippines and have written very positively about their experience; and members of Friends Philippines in the UK who undertake support work to generate enthusiasm for Philippine visits, and who have themselves gone to the islands. The Embassy, through DOT-London, has also invited the newly elected Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to grace the barrio fiesta.
The London barrio fiesta is organized by the Philippine Centre, the first and biggest umbrella organization of Filipino associations in the UK. In a recent meeting, the committee members of the Center agreed that from now on the event is to be officially called “Philippines Barrio Fiesta sa London”. This year, the fiesta will be held on July 19 and 20. With the Filipino population in the UK now nearing 200,000, and with the number of Anglo-Filipino families on the rise, it is expected that the festival will draw a record crowd this year. An even bigger attendance for this unique barrio fiesta is foreseen for next year, during its 25th anniversary.
As the fiesta grows in popularity among the British public—which includes the English, Welsh and Scottish people as well as the huge community of various ethnic nationalities in the UK—the fiesta has become a showcase not only of Filipino culture but also of multicultural friendship.

| Tourism Resilient Despite Crisis |
Nov/17/2008 |

|
Tourism Resilient Despite Crisis CEBU CITY – Responding to the financial crisis, the Department of Tourism (DOT), together with the UN World Tourism Organization, has drafted the Cebu Resolution here to ensure sustainability in tourism to face the challenges of the times.
This resolution was passed at the recently-concluded Sixth International Tourism Forum for Parliamentarians and Local Authorities, a well-attended event comprising of policy- and decision makers in the industry.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo encouraged the local and international delegations to "look beyond the difficulties posed by the current global economic slowdown, and address the major issues which will continue to influence the strategic directions of tourism; issues like climate change, the role of women, and the relationship between tourism and poverty alleviation," in her speech welcoming the participants at the Marquee of Shangri-la Mactan's Resort and Spa.
President Arroyo expressed her confidence in tourism's proven strong resilience in the face of global problems, citing the financial crisis of 1997 happening yet leaving barely a dent on the volume of tourist arrivals, and added, "Asia has endured political and social issues, and in spite of which the numbers of inbound visitors have continued to increase."
Francesco Frangialli, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, echoed the same composure and said, "Experience teaches us that tourism is resilient. During periods of economic downturn, the demand for leisure perhaps manifests itself in other forms, but it remains intact for the most part. For this reason, tourism is less vulnerable than other economic sectors to the fluctuations of the current situation."
Frangialli was convinced that although international tourism will be affected, it still has a bright future ahead of it. The UN WTO chief also assured the summit delegates that their Executive Council took decisions to make modifications in their programme of work that could mitigate the economic shock and help member countries successfully navigate this difficult phase.
Department of Tourism Secretary Ace Durano has always been optimistic that these challenging times will bring about unexpected growth. "The most crucial issues facing the industry were discussed in this forum; and our country hosting this important occasion signals our readiness in facing the challenges ahead."
Officials and representatives of parliaments and local governments met with members of the private sector, reflecting the important role which national, regional, and local governments have contributing to sustainable tourism.
"The Department is quite confident that amidst economic difficulties, the Philippines can emerge even stronger as there are alternative opportunities waiting to be tapped," he added.
The summit's overall programme was structured around the major challenges of tourism development, communication and ethics in tourism, and the economic knowledge of tourism at the local level and the measurement of employment in the tourism sector.
"Despite these rough times, our culture has always taught us Filipinos to think positively and see beyond. We continue to believe that tourism's very significant role is to provide a turning point; and with that, a more optimistic outlook for our country can be expected," said Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr.
"Looking at the country's tourism potential in a positive light is important if we want to emerge from this experience as victors. It is timely to discuss these key tourism concerns in a warm and welcoming country such as ours, where primary examples of tourism working for the best interests of people are evident," Jarque shared.
The Forum, which was held under the auspices of the UNWTO and the Government of the Philippines, unanimously agreed on the following Resolution – the creation of a of UNWTO 'Resilience Committee' to give immediate assistance to specific tourism industries, strengthening the implementation of the Davos Declaration to respond to the global challenges of climate change; emphasis on the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism; instilling basic guidelines on measuring tourism at the regional and local levels; and the general execution of these guidelines by allocating approximately two percent (2%) of their budget for tourism promotion to achieve the specific objectives noted.
The 'Resilience Committee,' formerly Crisis Committee, is envisioned to give urgent attention to all appropriate measures that could assist countries regarding the negative impacts the present financial crisis may have on their tourism industries. The delegates were also urged to set up necessary programs to enable their tourism sector to respond to the global challenges of climate change – which stands among the most pressing issues confronting tourism today.
Rolando Cañizal, Director for Tourism Development Planning, said, "Sustainable development is also very important if we want to create a lasting positive change. We are set to focus on particular issues such as climate change and poverty alleviation. Tourism should directly respond to these primary concerns."
He noted, "This is possible through the strengthening of our community-based tourism initiatives, such as the Grassroots Entrepreneurship in Ecotourism program, or GREET. We believe this had a pivotal role in transforming lives for the better, and a better world for all."
He also added that the DOT is exploring possibilities and linking partnerships with organizations committed to help promote community products, one of which is the pro-community trade and tourism program with the International Trade Center (ITC). These projects are seen to benefit marginalized communities in various |

DOT urges preservation of World Heritage Sites The Department of Tourism has brought attention to the protection of the country's sites in the UNESCO World Heritage list during the recently held World Heritage Travel Expo at the Venetian Convention and Exhibition Center in Macau.
"We appeal to the people, tourists who visit and local communities, to take care of these sites. These are sources of our livelihood as much as they are wellsprings of our national pride. We also owe their preservation not only to our fellow Filipinos but to the world and our future generation," said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
Durano extended his call to the other sectors, "We are also seeking help from schools, local government units and the basic unit of our society, the family, to enthuse our children in taking concrete steps to promote and give value to our heritage sites, as well as to our other tourism attractions."
Five of the country's sites in the Unesco World Heritage List are, the Baroque Churches of the Philippines, Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, and the Historic Town of Vigan.
The Baroque churches made it to the list because of their European Baroque architectural style designed by Chinese and Filipino craftsmen. Of the four churches located in Manila, Santa Maria, Paoay, and Miag-ao, one was built by the Spanish in the late 16th century.
Next on the list is the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park which, "is an example of a site that has derived great benefit from its World Heritage status," said Durano.
Alongside the worldwide attention, the Tubbataha Reef harnessed tourism receipts, impelled preservation and enticed involvement from the local community through its heritage site repute, according the tourism chief.
A testament to the country as island paradise, the next heritage site is another waterscape, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
The Subterranean Park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with its underground river.
"It's good to note that Subterranean Park is no. 1 on the New 7 Wonders of Nature ranking list. It stands out from the rest because it's a river that has strong tidal behaviors, due to its direct connection to the sea. It's also every conservationst's dream – a river that seamlessly flows into a mountain and forest landscape forming a teeming habitat of biodiversity," said Eduardo Jarque, Jr., Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions. |

| TOURISM: AN ENGINE FOR EMPLOYMENT CREATION AND ECONOMIC STIMULUS |
Apr/15/2009 |
| |
|
TOURISM: AN ENGINE FOR EMPLOYMENT CREATION AND ECONOMIC STIMULUS Bali, Indonesia, 3 April 2009 – The tourism industry continues to be amongst the most dynamic economic sectors, generating a wide range of benefits including a growing contribution to GDP, in some cases over 10%, and substantial foreign exchange earnings. Tourism as a reliable tool for sustainable job creation was at the centre of the 5th UNWTO International Conference on Tourism Statistics ( Bali, Indonesia, 30 March-2 April), with 450 participants from 70 countries and nine international organizations.
Tourism plays a crucial role in the creation of employment, which is especially important during the current economic crisis. The key challenges are to establish sustainable policies to enhance both the quantity and quality of employment in the tourism industry.
Participants in the Conference underscored the importance of public-private cooperation, particularly in the framework of advancing the Decent Work Agenda promoted by the International Labour Organization (ILO, a key partner of UNWTO within the UN family). In this regard it was agreed to both protect and promote the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) as a powerful brand which should be carefully developed and applied for the measurement of tourism’s contribution to developed and developing economies alike.
UNWTO’s Secretary-General ad interim Taleb Rifai said that “It’s crucial that we offer technical assistance to our Member States to enable them to measure how many jobs tourism generates in the economy, tourism’s contribution to GDP, and tourism’s ranking in comparison with other sectors of the economy”.
The International Conference on Tourism Statistics coincided with the efforts of the G20, meeting in London , UK , to stimulate the global economy. The TSA further underscores the potential of tourism and travel in any stimulus package and the shift towards a green economy, as stated in an open message by UNWTO to the G20.
Against this background, Mr. Rifai added that “In many countries, tourism has suffered from a lack of political and popular support because its true economic significance has often been underestimated. Now there is increasing awareness of tourism’s role as a productive activity and its potential to generate employment, government income and other benefits whether directly or through induced effects in the economy. This is increasingly important due to the role tourism can play in combating the current crisis.”
The Conference was jointly organized by UNWTO and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia , with the support of the UN Statistics Division (UNSD), the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the ILO and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

|
PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER MAKES HISTORY-Official Philippine nominee to the New 7 Wonders of Nature The people have spoken: Palawan's Subterranean River will represent the country to the world.
Winner of the national qualifiers category, the renowned Underground River will be the Philippines' bets in the New7Wonders of Nature race. Results of the first phase of voting in the Official New7Wonders of Nature campaign were revealed today at the New7Wonders Foundation headquarters.
"We are proud to announce that the Philippine marvels have stood strong in the first round of voting. This affirms us of the support of Filipinos as well as other tourists in helping our natural sites make their mark in the global scale," Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said.
Recently awarded for his efforts and advocacy in ecological tourism, he added, "With billions of supporters all over the globe, promotion of spectacular sites from all over the world has been set to greater heights. It is also very important to call on the sustainable promotion of these tourism sites, which are nature's blessings."
The first stage of the Official New7Wonders of Nature campaign officially ended with the old year. At midnight on December 31, 2008 on the International Date Line, all voting was suspended on the New7Wonders website until today, January 7th, for the organizers to tally and verify all votes.
Tia Viering, Head of Communications for New7Wonders, says "We congratulate the successful qualifying locations from the Philippines and wish them the best of luck in the second phase of voting."
She added, "We also at this time highlight the strong and enthusiastic participation of the other national nominees that are not proceeding—many have already benefited from a significant increase in worldwide awareness, which in itself is a recognized important benefit for all involved in the New7Wonders campaigns."
According to the Foundation, these magnificent natural sites are amongst the 261 nominees now one step closer to potentially being chosen one of the Official New7Wonders of Nature by the people of the world.
"The Philippines' wonders besting the others truly give us more reasons to strengthen not only the promotion, but the preservation of our natural sites," Eduardo Jarque, Jr., Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions remarked.
Jarque further said, "The New 7 Wonders campaign, gaining participation from numerous supporters will inevitably translate to increased interest in seeing these magnificent places. We thank and congratulate all Filipinos who have made their voice heard through the online polls."
The Philippines' Underground River shares the spotlight with the Coral Triangle, a multinational participant. Spanning eastern Indonesia, parts of Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands, the Coral Triangle is the global center of marine biodiversity and one of the world's top priorities for marine conservation.
Of the original 441 nominees, 180, or more than 40%, were eliminated as the next stage begins today until July 7, to select the Top 77 - the pool from which the 21 Official Finalists are chosen.
The qualified 261 national and multinational nominees from the 222 participating countries feature iconic locations such as the Grand Canyon, Loch Ness, the Black Forest, and Mount Fuji, alongside the Amazon, the Danube, the Dead Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, Iguazu Falls, the Kalahari Desert, Mont Blanc, and Niagara Falls.
As in the original successful campaign that chose the Official New 7 Wonders of the World thanks to more than 100 million votes, the N7W Panel of Experts will select the 21 Finalists from the top 77, which will be announced on July 21, 2009.
At that time the third and final phase of voting will begin, and the people of the world will then have approximately 2 years to vote amongst the 21 Finalists for the Official New7Wonders of Nature, to be revealed in 2011. Over 1 billion votes are forecast.

| 'Plan early for long holidays,' DOT |
Jan/20/2009 |
'Plan early for long holidays,' DOT Following President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's early declaration of long holidays for 2009, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has enticed Filipinos to start planning their out of town vacations early.
"We urge our countrymen to explore the 7,107 islands they haven't seen or would like to revisit. We have the beach, mountains, countryside, heritage sites, caves, rivers, food trips, urban verve, - almost everything a traveler would want to experience, the Philippines has it. We advise people to book ahead to get the best and affordable tour packages and promotional fares," said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
Citing the global economic crisis, Durano said that arrivals this year is foreseen to be tempered, with domestic tourism augmenting the slow down in foreign arrivals.
"We are confident we can hurdle the expected slow down in foreign arrivals especially if the whole nation contributes through domestic tourism. We can all enjoy our holiday while helping out our economy," Durano added.
A surge in tourism means more jobs and increased spending would also help the local businesses.
Durano has likewise advised DOT's regional offices to heighten its preparedness especially during the peak season.
"We also urge our partners – hotels, resorts, spas, tour operators, and transportation stakeholders, – to create more options and flexible packages. We have a very broad range of options to offer the most picky tourist. Group tours will also be big as we all know that Filipinos love to travel with their families and friends," said Durano.
On the particular sites that the agency is promoting, Eduardo Jarque, Jr, Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions, said that although Boracay, Palawan, Davao, Cebu, Bohol, Vigan, Baguio, Manila are the country's top spots, the agency is similarly advocating discovery of unexplored sites.
Siquijor, Camiguin, Quezon, Zamboanga del Sur and del Norte, Camsur, Batangas, Mindoro, Dumaguete, Leyte and Negros also have pristine beaches that can rival Boracay. While old heritage sites are not exclusive to Vigan, as Iloilo, Bacolod, and Laguna have their own century-old architectural marvels. Trekkers may consider the mountains of Sagada, Cavite, Bataan, Bulacan, Mountain Province, Romblon, Batanes, and Marinduque among others, said Jarque.
Among the more recent products of DOT is birdwatching, where one discovers exotic species of birds through powerful lenses. "In other parts of the world, birdwatching is an expensive leisure pursuit, taken up mostly by famous personalities. Here we have over 200 endemic species of birds within our view, we should be the first to discover our own national treasures," Jarque said.
The Palace has declared the following as regular and special non-working holidays for 2009:
- Araw ng Kagitingan April 4-6, Saturday - Monday
- Holy Week April 9-12, Thursday - Sunday
- Labor Day May 1-3, Friday - Sunday
- Independence Day June 12-14, Friday - Sunday
- Ninoy Aquino Day August 21-23, Friday - Sunday
- National Heroes Day August 29-31, Saturday - Monday
- All Saints' Day October 31-Nov 2, Saturday - Monday
- Bonifacio Day November 28-30, Saturday - Monday
- Christmas Eve December 24-27, Thursday - Sunday
- New Year's Eve/Rizal Day December 30-Jan 3, 2010, Wednesday to Sunday
The observance of Eid'l Fitr or the end of Ramadan will be issued by the government upon the advice of the Office on Muslim Affairs.

| RP is Asia’s Most Popular Destination, Makes mark in World Travel Fair 2009 |
Apr/17/2009 |
|
RP is Asia’s Most Popular Destination, Makes mark in World Travel Fair 2009 SHANGHAI, CHINA -- The Philippines was named the ‘Most Popular Destination in Asia’, after a public vote and a strict evaluation process undertaken by professional jurors from the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and VNU Exhibitions Europe, at the recent World Travel Fair (WTF) 2009.
“Our country receiving the highest laurel in Asia’s leading source fair in China is a notable milestone in the industry’s optimism in sustaining the momentum generated from efforts to reach this important market segment,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
The tourism chief added, “The Philippines is one of the fastest growing destinations in China’s outbound travel industry, recording a 74% month-on-month growth rate in visa issuances for February of this year. We are also the nearest tropical beach country for the Chinese, as Manila is only 2 hours away from Guangzhou, while Cebu is only 3 hours away from Shanghai.”
Durano likewise attributed the win to the country’s competitive tour pricing, the remarkable progress of the transportation sector and the Filipino’s friendliness and hospitality.
Dubbed as the ‘Outbound Travel Industry's Leading Source Fair in Asia, the WTF receives thousands of travel buyers from China, Asia and the rest of the world, who come to hold exchanges with more than 500 exhibitors from 62 countries, held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.
“The Chinese travellers rank our country’s beaches and heritage sites high, as proven by the various recognitions they have awarded to our tourist spots,” Durano said further.
Beach holidays rank 79% among the top leisure activities undertaken by the Chinese, according to an outbound travel study in China, while the International Visitor Survey conducted by the DOT reported that foreign visitors rank the country highest for visitor satisfaction in terms of Filipino hospitality.
Due to its strong partnership with a consortium of travel agents, the DOT has urged the transportation sector to open direct chartered flights and daily regular flights to Cebu and Manila. These developments have reflected a 61% increase in number of chartered flights operated in 2008 compared to last year.
Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr. was enthusiastic to point out that the country has always garnered positive feedback from Asian tourists, “The Philippines has managed to secure, among others, the Best Leisure Destination in the last year’s WTF, for Boracay; the Top 10 Island Getaways for Chinese Summer Travel, for Bohol; the only Asian entry in the list of premier destinations in the acclaimed World Traveller Magazine; and Top 10 Most Searched Destination among Shanghai online users.”
Jarque was referring to Baidu, the biggest search engine in China capturing 68% of the Chinese online market (Google a distant second with 20% market share), which listed the Philippines in the Top 10 most searched travel destination among Shanghai online users from its latest report.
Meanwhile, Arlene Alipio, head of DOT Team China, noted that the flourishing outbound travel of China has been propitious to the Philippines as well, “Recent statistics from the China National Tourism Administration show that the number of Chinese travellers reached 34.4 million in the first nine months of this year, up by 14.8 percent year-on-year. In September alone, about 3.7 million Chinese people travelled overseas, an increase of 9 percent year-on-year. “
Shanghai-based Philippine Tourism Attaché to China, Gerry Panga, shared, “The country’s continued and consolidated efforts in promoting a wide array of travel opportunities to its Asian neighbours have indeed resulted to our strong market performance despite the global crunch.
RP posted a growth rate of 58.5% in 2008 in terms of visa issuances for travel to the Philippines from Eastern China plus Sichuan and Chongqing. Current growth rate stands at 20% from January to March 2009, making the Philippines one of the fastest growing outbound destinations for Chinese tourists.

RP Poised for a ‘Big Catch’ of Game Fishing Enthusiasts 7 May, 2009, SIARGAO, Philippines – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is co-hosting this year’s Invitational Game Fishing Tournament here today, together with the First District of Surigao del Norte.
Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism opens this landmark event with Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, together with Rep. Francisco Matugas of the First District of Surigao, and attended by local and foreign dignitaries.
“With our specialized tourism activities, the country is ready to be positioned as a significant game fishing venue. Blessed with a prime location, the Philippines is ready to welcome enthusiasts of this unique sport,” said Durano.
Considered as a form of recreational fishing as well as a legitimate sport, game fishing targets to catch the largest bony fish in the open sea, a timely initiative as the country’s tourism industry continues to go for niche marketing to get a ‘big catch’ of arrivals for 2009.
Durano reiterated, “Domestic travel is a key component in the country. We continually encourage activity in local communities, and with events like this enjoining both local and international delegates, we are assured that tourism growth is on a very solid foundation.”
The scenic coastal town of Pilar, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte is host to second run of this international tournament, expecting to draw numerous local and foreign anglers from Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan and the United States.
Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr remarked, “This will certainly boost Surigao's tourism industry, which is also known as a surfing destination. Matugas agreed, “Cloud Nine, the largest mangrove forest in the country at 8,760 hectares, pristine white sand beaches, and tropical marine life-rich coral reefs, continue to attract a huge volume of tourists each year.”
Resolute that tourism is the prime vehicle for development in the island and of the whole Province of Surigao del Norte, he added, “With enhancement of the area’s travel opportunities, tourism will be a major contributor to the upliftment of the community’s livelihood.” |

| RP Taps High-Spending Middle East Market |

RP Taps High-Spending Middle East Market The Philippines continues to welcome high-spenders from the Middle East as the Department of Tourism (DOT) leads the country’s participation to the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) this week in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Tourism chief Ace Durano said, “This market offers a bright potential due to the high spending capacity of its travellers. In 2008, the country received a total of 40,508 arrivals from the Middle East."
According to DOT Research and Statistics Division, this figure represented a growth rate of 13.51% from the previous year. For the first quarter of 2009, visitor numbers have already grown by 20%.
“The Philippines has been strong in luring investors, despite the global crunch. RP joining a unique and significant travel fair shows our readiness to nurture business investments in the country and continually spur economic growth,” Durano further said.
The ATM is the industry’s leading travel and tourism exhibition dedicated to unlocking the business potential within the Middle East region. Uniting key market players from six continents, the Arabian Travel Market is four days of intensive meetings, seminars, press conferences and networking opportunities.
“Our participation in this unique travel event signals continuing growth from this niche market segment. Travelers from the Middle East find our country suitable for shopping, conventions and investments. Expanding travel options for this segment is a direction the DOT is taking,” noted Tourism Undersecretary for Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr.
Marketing Team Head Benito Bengzon, Jr., explained, “With over 14,000 visitors representing 114 countries last year, the ATM will be attended by key market players from all over the globe. We are enthusiastic to lead our country’s contingent, which offers the best of the Philippines to travelers and business investors.”
Now on its 16th year, the ATM is an avenue for a well-participated Philippine delegation comprising of hotels, resorts, and travel agencies from Manila, Cebu, and Boracay. The country’s 60-square meter booth highlights shopping and beach destinations, among the prime travel choices for the Middle East market.

| Honest airport cops rewarded with all-expenses paid holiday |

Honest airport cops rewarded with all-expenses paid holiday Honesty has its own reward. For Corporals Eduardo Duran and Irvin Hawk of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) police, it’s a family holiday in any of the country’s top destinations.
The two honest cops were recognized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) for returning a black bag containing wads of Russian Rubbles and US Dollars equivalent to almost P500,000 cash. The owner of the bag turned out to be Russian tourist Sergey Zhelenzyak, who was with his family for a vacation in the country.
“The tourism industry commends people like Corporals Duran and Hawk who render excellent service and present the best of the country through their exemplary ways. We hope our small token of appreciation highlights their big deed,” said Durano. The cops, accompanied by M/Gen Angel Atutubo (Ret), Assistant General Manager of the Manila Airport Authority, paid a courtesy call at the DOT office.
Duran and Hawk, in an interview, mentioned that Zhelenzyak was profusely grateful to them for returning his bag, with the money and other contents which included a digital camera, intact.
“These gentlemen prove that our people are also one of the best reasons to visit the country. Even the finest, luxurious services can never outshine the warmth, honesty and sincerity of our people,” said Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque, Jr., Tourism Planning and Promotions.
The two airport cops found the bag unattended in one of the immigration counters at the NAIA. They reported the lost bag which had an identification tag in Russian writing, to their Intelligence Division. After paging for the owner and getting no response, Duran and Hawk tracked him down through his embarkation card at the Immigration Counter. They finally reached Zhelenzyak, who was already in Bacolod, through his travel agent.
The tourist told them that he didn’t expect to get his money back, which he was saving for a holiday in the country with his family. Zhelenzyak, who was on his fourth visit to the country, vowed to them that he will promote the Philippines and the commendable values of its people.
Duran has been an airport police for 10 years, while Hawk has rendered service for 27 years.

| DOT MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 2009-04 -DOH INTERIM GUIDELINE NO. 6 (INFLUENZA A H1N1 PANDEMIC) |
June/15/2009 |
|
DOT MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 2009-04 -DOH INTERIM GUIDELINE NO. 6 (INFLUENZA A H1N1 PANDEMIC) For the information of all concerned, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is closely coordinating with the UNWTO and the Tourism Emergency Response Network (TERN) in providing timely information on the status of the spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus throughout the world.
Locally, the DOT has been regularly sending guidelines, instructions and advisories to all our regional offices for immediate dissemination to all stakeholders in their respective areas of operations. These actions are meant to assist and guide the industry in the prevention, proper management and mitigation of Influenza A (H1N1) cases should anyone exhibit symptoms of the virus or should this occur in any of the tourism related establishments in the country, especially hotels, resorts and lodging houses. The DOH recently issued Interim Guideline No. 6 on the pre-emptive and precautionary measures to be observed by personnel and guests in hotels and similar lodging establishments to prevent or mitigate the impact of an Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.
The Department is requesting compliance of all tourism related establishments to observe the following pre-emptive and precautionary measures as prescribed by the DOH:
A. Pre-emptive Precautionary Measures
1. Keep yourself informed. Know the status of the Influenza A (H1N1) infection globally, in the country and, more specifically, in the city or municipality where your establishment is located through print, radio, TV, the internet and other reliable sources of information.
2. Search and post important contact numbers. The Influenza A (H1N1) hotline is (02) 711-1001/1002 or email messages may be sent to doh_hems@yahoo.com. Find out from your local health offices the names, location and contact numbers of the designated referral hospitals nearest your area.
3. Share information. Provide all staff and guests with leaflets and other visual or information materials to remind them of the general precautions to avoid catching or transmitting the virus, and other related respiratory tract infections. Request for staff orientation from local health authorities, if necessary.
4. Encourage reporting. All staff and guests should be instructed to report to management any occurrence of flu-like illness (fever and cough, sneeze, sore throat, runny nose, etc.) within the hotel or accommodation premises. Encourage reporting by instituting confidentiality measures for this kind of information that should be kept from other guests and limited to a few responsible staff. Refrain from imposing salary deductions on staff found to have the flu.
5. Provide medical and nursing services. Develop in-house medical or nursing services and if necessary, create a Task Force that will act as the group of individuals primarily responsible in immediately addressing a situation or concern. Network with the nearest local government office and nearest hospital facility for proper referral of guests who may fall ill during their stay.
6. Keep a watch list. Review and analyse your guest lists for travellers from countries that have reported confirmed and suspected cases, and assure them of immediate assistance should they show symptoms of being infected with the virus.
7. Enforce cleanliness.
a. Train staff to protect themselves through regular personal hygiene, frequent hand washing, use of masks and strict adherence to rules on surface disinfection.
b. Ensure the adequate and available supply of cleaning materials, tools and disinfectants to clean premises and decontaminating rooms used by guests who are ill.
c. Ensure the adequate and available supply of soap, running water, protective masks, gowns and gloves for staff use when necessary.
B. Management of Guests who exhibit Flu-like Illness
1. Use available health services. If personnel are concerned about the condition of a guest, or if a guest requests access to medical services, immediately inform the hotel physician for initial assessment of the guest and refer the guest to the DOH thru Tel. Nos. (02) 711-1001/1002.
2. Do not panic. There are ways to protect yourself from getting the virus:
a. Refrain from employing discriminatory action against a sick person with flu-like symptoms or illness for fear of contracting or spreading the virus.
b. Remember that Influenza A (H1N1) is only one of the many flu-like illnesses we have in the country.
c. Keep the sick confined in his/her room originally used until trained transport providers are available to conduct the ill guest to a designated referral facility for laboratory testing.
3. Gentle reminders. Remind guests to practice sanitary lung clearing procedures like covering the nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing using disposable tissue papers and hand washing.
4. Immediate action. Aim to provide the guest who has flu-like symptoms or illness with immediate medical services.
C. Room and Area Decontamination
1. Ventilate the room by opening external windows.
2. Remove bed linen and towels and place them in disposable bags separate from linen and towels of non-sick persons.
3. Dispose of all disposable items such as sachets, toilet rolls and used items in sealed bags immediately.
4. Ensure that prompt action is taken to clean areas that may have been soiled by secretions.
5. Ensure that hard surfaces like door handles, light switches, taps, kitchen worktops are cleaned more frequently than usual using regular cleaning products.
6. Clean remaining items using water and detergents, and frequently clean surfaces of furniture, appliances, flooring and panes with disinfectants.
D. Protection and Monitoring of Hotel Personnel
1. Staff who clean rooms occupied by guests who have fallen ill must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as fit-tested N95 masks, disposable hand gloves, eye protective goggles/ shield and gown. Take off and dispose of PPEs in standard manner.
2. For routine cleaning of rooms and spaces, encourage the use of disposable gloves and surgical masks.
3. After routine disinfection of rooms or decontamination of a room or area previously occupied by a suspected case, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and any alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
4. Maintain an updated list of contact details of each member of the hotel crew or staff.
5. Review attendance records and reports of staff illness at the start of each day, and determine if there is a pattern of absence secondary to communicable diseases.
6. Provide medical consultation benefits to staff including opportunities to go on a self-imposed social distancing when they develop flu-like symptoms.
For strict compliance.

| No Travel Restrictions Recommended Despite Move to Phase 6 |
June/19/2009 |
|
No Travel Restrictions Recommended Despite Move to Phase 6 Madrid, Spain, 18 June 2009 - The worldwide travel and tourism industry was gratified to learn that the UN Secretary-General and the World Health Organization (WHO) both recommended against restrictions on travel and border closures despite the move to phase 6 pandemic status of the A(H1N1) influenza virus.
Specifically, Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, stressed in a
statement to the press on 11 June 2009 that "WHO continues to recommend no restrictions on travel and no border closures".
On the same day UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that "we must guard against rash and discriminatory action, such as travel bans or trade restrictions".
The move to phase 6 is based on the geographic spread of the influenza
A(H1N1) virus and is not related to its severity. The current overall
assessment of the severity of the virus remains moderate.
WHO points out that limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the disease, but would be highly disruptive to the global community.
In order to protect themselves and others under the current situation,
individual travelers are cautioned to act in a responsible manner towards themselves, towards those around them and in the host communities of their destinations. They should familiarize themselves with the simple prevention practices that apply in daily life and while travelling such as hand-washing and normal cough etiquette. People who are ill should delay travel plans. Returning travellers who show influenza symptoms should contact their health care provider.
Travelers are encouraged to stay informed. They should check regularly with www.SOS.travel and other reliable resources for the latest updates and information issued by health and travel professionals to monitor any
developments.

| Philippines honored in ‘Open Doors’ monument in Israel |
June/23/2009 |
|
Philippines honored in ‘Open Doors’ monument in Israel The Open Doors monument in honour of the Philippines has been unveiled at the Rishon Lezion Memorial Park in Israel yesterday, forging stronger ties between the two countries.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, who was Guest of Honour at the event, said, “This monument commemorates the Philippines’ selfless efforts in opening the country for thousands of Jews, where they found a safe haven during a difficult period in their history. It is indeed an honour to remember this strong connection, at a time when the world is faced with a lot uncertainty and challenges.”
The Open Doors marker now sits as a historical landmark recognizing the Filipino people for their ‘courage, hospitality and the determination… to give humanitarian support for the European Jews seeking refuge from the Holocaust in the 1930s,’ according to the Philippine embassy in Israel.
Durano added, “This is a remarkable milestone to further better linkages between the Philippines and Israel. We are one of the first to recognize the State of Israel, and today the warm relations between our countries continue.”
In 1939, fully understanding the crisis the Jews were facing, President Manuel L. Quezon was instrumental in making ten thousand visas earmarked for travel to the Philippines. He declared an open doors policy, making a difference in the lives of thousands of Jews, some of which were in the event to celebrate the remarkable occasion.
Also present in the historical unveiling was Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr., who noted, “The warm hospitality of the Filipino people undoubtedly shed light on one of the Jewish people’s most trying times. This same characteristic has always drawn people from different cultures to Philippines. Aside from the destinations, the Filipinos’ hospitable spirit continues to leave a lasting mark on others.”
Reinforcing President Quezon’s open door policy were provisions for housing in Marikina in 1939, and an allotment for a farm and large settlement area in Mindanao for the Jewish refugees before the outbreak of World War II.
Such episodes were documented in a book Escape to Manila by Frank Ephraim, a Holocaust survivor. Four years ago, this book inspired the creation of the Open Doors monument through the initiative of the late Ambassador to Israel Antonio Modena, who died in Manila in February 2007.
In his book, Ephraim wrote, “The Philippines held out a promise of a safe haven from Nazi oppression, offering survival from mass murder of the Jewish people in Europe.”
The monument, showing modern conceptual doors, was designed by acclaimed Filipino artist Jun Yee. According to Yee, “The rising design of the open doors represents ‘soaring in triumph.’ One cannot imagine a more fitting symbol for this occasion than the Open Doors, dramatically and contemporarily designed.”
Philippine marble tiles from Romblon were used for the monument, along with metal sheets and reinforced concrete for the base.
Jarque mentioned, “The marble tiles coming from the island of Romblon, the heartland of our country, symbolize our country’s part in Israel’s story. The Jewish community in the Philippines and in other parts of the world also supported this initiative, and it is heartening to know that our friendship with the Jewish people have emerged stronger.”

| More Indian MICE groups set to arrive in RP |
June/26/2009 |
|
More Indian MICE groups set to arrive in RP The Department of Tourism is set to welcome more than 300 tourists from two Indian MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) groups, Italco, a cement company and Quality Circle Forum.
Italco is a cement manufacturing company, while Quality Circle Forum is a group of professionals involved in quality control for both government and private entities in India.
The groups are scheduled for shopping and clubbing around Metro Manila’s cosmopolitan districts and island-hopping in Cebu’s prime beaches.
“The emerging market of India is a significant source of arrivals, specially since global tourism groups point to the remarkable growth of India’s outbound tourists which are also in the high-spending bracket,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.
The tourism chief cited the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) World Travel Trends Report 2009, wherein India’s outbound travelers recorded a 13% increase in overall trip volume in 2008, surpassing initial forecasts.
According to the report, more and more destinations are setting up tourism offices in India which is a booming source of arrivals that augment slowdowns in other affected markets.
“Indians also travel in groups not only for MICE events but also with their family. And as a recession-proof segment, they will not hesitate to spend on high-end accommodations such as five-star hotels and shopping sprees at our first-rate malls,” shared Eduardo Jarque, Jr., Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions.
India has been billed as a star emerging market with its more than 1 billion residents and burgeoning middle class. Business trips comprise the bulk of its outgoing travels. The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) likewise predicts more Indian travelers with its forecast of 50 million outbound tourists by 2010.

| TRAVEL ADVISORY: Philippine tourism unfazed by A (H1N1) situation |
June/26/2009 |
|
TRAVEL ADVISORY: Philippine tourism unfazed by A (H1N1) situation The Department of Tourism (DOT) remains unhampered at the increasing number of A (H1N1) cases in the country, optimistic that complete recovery of all confirmed patients is on the upswing.
As of 3:00 PM yesterday, June 25, 2009, there have been 727 reported cases of the virus, of which 536 or 74% of the total confirmed cases since May of this year have fully recovered from the symptoms. Based on data from the Department of Health (DOH), a notably rapid recovery is evident. To date, 85 more patients have completely recovered from the pandemic flu and were sent home, while new cases numbering 123 are being closely monitored.
According to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “From a global perspective, the H1N1 flu is no different from the known seasonal flu; it is mild and treatable. In fact, in the US and Mexico where it all started, it is perceived and responded to just like any other seasonal flu. The state of the global economy is still the biggest challenge for the industry.”
He added, “In Australia where the most H1N1 cases in Asia Pacific are recorded, the population has already overcome the initial psychological scare that an unknown virus naturally brings. Comparing such cases with the Philippine scenario, what we have is even milder. In the country, while the occurrences of the virus are in populated areas, these are not in main tourism destinations.”
“As far as the industry is concerned, my job is to make sure this temporary concern will not distract the industry from pursuing opportunities in the near- and medium-term,” Durano further said.
The DOT likewise reported that at present, 50 foreign tour operators from France, Switzerland, China, US, Canada, as well as Asia Pacific countries are here in the Philippines for the purpose of updating themselves on the new hotels, resorts, destinations, and tourism experiences in the country.
For the previous months, the DOT has echoed the statements of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), issuing no travel restrictions.
As of 9:07 AM today, June 26, 2009, the WHO also reiterated that globally, the virus is not mutating for the moment and is stable.
The DOT’s marketing departments and regional units remain on heightened alert for any case of flu-like symptoms from arriving tourists.
DOT Marketing Teams report no buyer cancellations, especially for the present Philippine International Travel Fair (PITF) in Cebu, one of the biggest travel events in the country; and MICE Mart, also an important tourism event slated for the year.
Tourism attachés reported no cancellations or deferment in East Coast, Midwest, West Coast, US and Canada. Instead of expressing anxiety, American travelers planning to go to the Philippines have inquired more on the thermal scanning procedures and the quarantine process.
Ground handlers from the European market segment have issued no cancellations resulting from the flu, and agree that since it is the off-peak season, arrivals at this time are almost negligible. For France and Switzerland, the focus now is on air safety, following the recent Air France tragedy.
The DOT strongly urges tourism stakeholders and partners such as transportation services, hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other tourism establishments, to be even more vigilant and impose stricter measures on proper hygiene to prevent the further spread of the virus.
Every step is being taken to ensure the safety of everyone. Airports and all concerned establishments from the tourism sector continue with their strict monitoring of incoming travelers who show initial symptoms. |
